Wisdom, Creation, and Human Weakness

 Wisdom 9:1 - 6 IECOT Edition

editor: Luca Mazzinghi translator Michael Tait

(2019, Kohlhammer, Stuttgart)

God of the fathers and Lord of mercy,

who have made everything with your

word (GREEK: en logou_ sou_)

and with your wisdom have created

humanity to rule over the creatures

you have made and govern the world

with holiness and justice and exercise

justice with a fair mind: give me the

wisdom which sits beside your throne

and do not cast me away from your

children.  For I am your servant and

the son of your handmaid, a man

weak and short-lived,

too weak to understand judgement

and laws.

For even if there were someone who

was perfect among human beings,

if he lacked the wisdom that comes

from you, he would be considered

as nothing.

[alludes to "Dominion" in Genesis

1:26 - 28 as well as Gen. 8:7-9]

[GREEK: KTISMA / creature] is a

late usage see Ben Sira 36:14 /

in N.Testament James 1:18 and

Revelation 8:9

The theme of the shortness of life

has a meaning distinct from that in

Wisdom 2:1 and takes up themes

from Psalm 39 & I Chronicles 29:15

(Prayer of David).
