Lincoln Memorial dedicated May 30, 1922 (story of design)

from Writer's Almanac (American Public Media, Garrison Keillor):
On this day in 1922, the Lincoln Memorial was dedicated. The monument was first proposed in 1867, but construction didn't begin until 1914; the cornerstone was set in 1915. Architect Henry Bacon designed it to resemble the Parthenon, believing that a defender of democracy should be memorialized in a building that pays homage to the birthplace of democracy. The monument has 36 marble columns, one for each state in the union at the time of Lincoln's assassination. On the south wall is inscribed the Gettysburg Address, and on the north, his second inaugural address. There's a persistent myth that one of the words in the inaugural address is misspelled, but it's not true. Stonemasons did accidentally carve an "E" where they meant to carve an "F," but it was filled in immediately and no evidence remains.
The marble and granite chosen for the monument came from Massachusetts, Colorado, Georgia, Tennessee, Indiana, and Alabama. Bacon intended to show the divided nation coming together to build something of lasting significance.
Sculptor Daniel Chester French studied photographs of Lincoln for years; his Lincoln appears somber, even care-worn, one hand closed in a fist and the other in a more relaxed position. Though it's commonly thought that the sculpture's hands are forming the American Sign Language letters "A" and "L," the National Park Service reports that this was French's way to show Lincoln's strength and compassion. There's also a rumor that the profile of Robert E. Lee — or Ulysses S. Grant, or Jefferson Davis — can be seen in the locks of the sculpture's hair, but the National Parks Service insists that these are merely wayward strands.
The monument was dedicated in front of an audience of more than 50,000 people. Even though Lincoln was known as the Great Emancipator, the audience was segregated; keynote speaker Robert Moton, president of the Tuskegee Institute and an African-American, was not permitted to sit on the speakers' platform. Just over 40 years later, on the 100th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, Martin Luther King Jr. would give his "I have a dream" speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, in front of an audience of 200,000.

Minute of silence (June 2, 2017) -- train, bus, transit stop -- Portland, OR

from OREGON, LIVE:
TriMet plans to halt all buses and trains Friday in a moment of silence honoring the people killed or otherwise affected by last week's attack on a train in Northeast Portland.
Safety permitting, MAX operators will stop trains at their nearest station and bus drivers will pull over at stops or along their routes at noon Friday, TriMet said in a news release. The agency invites the public to participate in the minute of silence, whether they're on a bus or train, transit stop or somewhere else.
"TriMet stands together with our community," the agency said. "We wish to pay respects and offer a small initial tribute to Mr. Best and Mr. Meche for their ultimate sacrifice, at to Mr. Fletcher as he recovers. We wish peace for those who are forever affected by this tragedy."
The statement refers to Rick Best, 53; Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche, 23; and Micah Fletcher, 21.
Jeremy Joseph Christian, 35, is accused of pulling a knife and striking the three men in the neck Friday. They came to the aid of two girls who were the target of Christian's racist vitriol, according to police and witnesses.
Best and Namkai-Meche died of multiple stab wounds. Fletcher is no longer hospitalized. . .

Ramadan begins evening of Friday. May 27, 2017: Religious News Service background posting

The Muslim month of fasting, Ramadan, starts Friday (May 27). Here are answers about the significance of this religious observance. The Conversation
Why is Ramadan called Ramadan?
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, and lasts either 29 or 30 days, depending on when the new crescent moon is (or should be) visible.
The Arabic term Ramadan connotes intense heat. It seems that in pre-Islamic Arabia, Ramadan was the name of a scorching hot summer month. In the Islamic calendar, however, the timing of Ramadan varies from year to year. This year Ramadan will begin around May 27; next year it will begin around May 16. (An Islamic year is roughly 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year.)

What is the significance of Ramadan?
Ramadan is a period of fasting and spiritual growth, and is one of the five “pillars of Islam” (the others being the declaration of faith, daily prayer, alms-giving, and the pilgrimage to Mecca). Able-bodied Muslims are expected to abstain from eating, drinking and sexual relations from dawn to sunset each day of the month. Many practicing Muslims also perform additional prayers, especially at night, and attempt to recite the entire Quran. The prevailing belief among Muslims is that it was in the final 10 nights of Ramadan that the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.
What is the connection between soul and body that the observance of Ramadan seeks to explain?
The Quran states that fasting was prescribed for believers so that they may be conscious of God. By abstaining from things that people tend to take for granted (such as water), it is believed, one may be moved to reflect on the purpose of life and grow closer to the creator and sustainer of all existence. As such, engaging in wrongdoing effectively undermines the fast. Many Muslims also maintain that fasting allows them to get a feeling of poverty, and this may foster feelings of empathy.

Anna Jarvis: Mother's Day and how she felt of its observance (Handwritten letters)

from Writer's Almanac (American Public Media : Garrison Keillor):
Today is Mother’s Day, first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her own mother at a church in Grafton, West Virginia. Jarvis’s mother had been a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the Civil War, and Jarvis campaigned her entire life for a national day to honor all mothers. She wrote letters to anyone who had influence, like President Teddy Roosevelt, former Postmaster General John Wanamaker, and even Mark Twain. Finally, in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed an official proclamation declaring Mother’s Day a national holiday. It’s held on the second Sunday of every May.
Almost as soon as Wilson signed his proclamation, companies began selling greeting cards, flowers, and gifts. Jarvis felt handwritten letters could express love more honestly than greeting cards, and she filed numerous lawsuits against card companies like Hallmark.
Anna Jarvis lived the last years of her life in a nursing home, nearly blind, and almost penniless. On her wall was a letter with a $1.00 bill sewn to it. The letter read: “I am 6 years old and I love my mother very much. I am sending this to you because you started Mother’s Day.”

Prayers for famine & hunger vicitims of S. Sudan, Nigeria, Somalia, Kenya

from WORLD VISION Blog (www.wvi.org )  posting:
"Look with pity Lord on the children of South Sudan who live with injustice, fear, disease, hunger and death as their constant companions. Have mercy upon them and strengthen them in this time of travail. Lord, strengthen the hands of all those who work tirelessly to assist those in need. Protect all aid workers from peril. Give us the strength and resources to heal those who are broken in body and spirit. Above all, allow peace to return to this beleaguered young nation. Grant all this Father for the love of your Son who for our sake himself became poor, Jesus Christ our Lord."

- Perry M. Mansfield | National Director, World Vision South Sudan

“Dear Heavenly Father, we pray for the South Sudanese political leaders that they will put the welfare of their people, especially the welfare of the most vulnerable members of society (orphans, widows and elderly) first, instead of their own personal interests. We pray for the church to be a true witness of the sacrificial love of our Lord Jesus Christ at this critical time in our nation’s history. We pray for your healing power upon all South Sudanese communities who have been affected by unimaginable trauma due to terrible atrocities committed against them or their loved ones. We pray that you touch the hearts of all South Sudanese to choose forgiveness instead of revenge, reconciliation instead of conflict and peace instead of war.”

- The Most Rev Moses Deng Bol | Archbishop of Northern Bhar El Ghazal Internal Province and Bishop of the Diocese of Wau, South Sudan

May Day from Writers Almanac compiler Garrison Keillor's viewpoint

Today is May Day, the first of May, a date that may have more holidays than any other. It's the date when many countries celebrate Labor Day, a tradition with its roots in the 19th-century labor movement in the United States. In 1886, unions around the country went on strike in support of an eight-hour workday. Since many of the organizers of the strikes were communists, socialists, and anarchists, May Day has also come to be associated with communism, and was a big national holiday in the Soviet Union. President Eisenhower tried to take back May Day during the Cold War by declaring it Law Day and Loyalty Day. It remains a day of rallies and protests in many parts of the world, and in 2006, protest returned to the United States on May 1st to call attention to immigrants' rights.
Its roots as a holiday run much deeper than the labor movement, however. It's been a celebration of spring and fertility in places like Egypt and India, and in pre-Christian Rome it was the time of the festival of Flora, the goddess of flowers. In medieval England, people gathered flowers to "bring in the May" and erected a maypole bedecked with garlands. It's also the date of Beltane, a Celtic calendar festival celebrating the start of summer. Beltane was known for its bonfires, and has been revived by neo-pagans all over the world as a major religious holiday. In Germany, May 1st was the date of a pagan festival that was assimilated by the Christians and turned into the feast day of St. Walpurgis. The night before — Walpurgisnacht — is still celebrated in parts of rural Germany as a kind of Valentine's Day, with the delivery of a tree, wrapped in streamers, to one's beloved. It's also a day to celebrate Hawaiian history and culture, and it's known as Lei Day in Hawaii. One of the largest contemporary May Day celebrations in the United States takes place in Minneapolis, with a parade and pageant staged by the Heart of the Beast Puppet Theatre. It's been going on since 1975 and attracts about 35,000 people every year.
