Embryonic Stem Cell study on Spinal cord paralysis -- to proceed in 2010 after FDA approval

from a "Silicon Valley" media source of information online:

A Menlo Park biotech firm said Friday that federal regulators will let it proceed with the world's first human test of a treatment made from embryonic stem cells, a much-anticipated but controversial study of patients with spinal cord injuries that had been placed on hold for nearly a year because of safety concerns.

If the treatment from Geron works, it "would be revolutionary," said Dr. Richard Fessler, a neurological surgeon at Northwestern University, who will lead the study of a stem-cell treatment designed to be injected into patients with spinal injuries to restore their motor function. "The therapy would provide a viable treatment option for thousands of patients who suffer severe spinal cord injuries each year."

Geron has spent 15 years and more than $150 million to develop the treatment, and "getting it into a clinical trial, just by itself, is a big deal," added Fessler, who has no financial ties to the company.

Many people hope that human embryonic stem cells, which can turn into any type of tissue in the body, could prove useful for everything from generating organs for transplants to helping test drugs on numerous diseases. But because the cells are derived from discarded 3- to-5-day-old embryos, their use by researchers has sparked ethical concerns and a highly contentious national debate.

The Food and Drug Administration had put the study on hold last year after a few animals the company was testing with its treatment developed small cysts. Although similar cysts had appeared in earlier animal studies, they appeared with "a higher frequency" in more recent animal tests, the company said at the time.

FDA officials declined to comment on why they decided to lift their hold on the study. However, Geron said Friday that it determined the cysts "did not lead to any adverse consequences to the animals" and that the company changed some of its procedures "to minimize the likelihood of cyst formation."
After Geron's announcement, its stock price rose 83 cents, or about 17 percent, to $5.63 at the close of trading.  In studies several years ago, Geron reported that its spinal treatment had helped paralyzed rats walk. The company's treatment involves turning embryonic cells into another type of cell, which helps nerve fibers replace myelin, a fatty insulating substance that often gets stripped away when spines are injured, inhibiting the body's ability to transmit sensory signals.

1970 Cambridge History of the Bible (Vol. 1, part III, #6)

Part of an article by G.W. Anderson, Prof. of OT Literature and Theology, Edinburgh Univ. (pp. 113 - 159)

. . .in Codex Vaticanus (B) the prophets come last, and the poetical books come between the main histories and a smaller group of narrative books: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 - 4 Kingdoms (I Samuel, II Samuel, I Kings, II Kings), 1 Chronicles, 2 Chronicles, 1 Esdras (Ezra), 2 Esdras (Nehemiah), Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes (Qoheleth), the Song of Songs, Job, the Wisdom of Solomon, Ecclesiasticus (ben Sira), Esther, Judith, Tobit, Hosea, Amos, Micah, Joel, Obadaiah, Jonah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Baruch, Lamentations, the Epistle of Jeremy, Ezekiel, Daniel. . .The Greek-speaking Christian Church took over the Septuagint, which contained other works and in which, moreover, some of the canonical books included additional sections. . .When the patristic writers (early Christian fathers/authorities) try to enumerate the contents of the Old Testament canon their almost unanimous adherence to the total 22 (24), even when they also mention additional books, indicates that the "Palestinian canon" was accepted without question. . .
The OT Apocrypha book titled 2 Esdras / IV Ezra included this pronouncement/directive = "Make public the 24 books you wrote first, and let the worthy and unworthy read them; but keep the 70 that were written last, in order to give them to the wise among your people. For in them is the spring of understanding, the fountain of wisdom, and the river of knowledge." (chapter 14, verses 45-47)

Ben Sira - chapter 12

12: 1 - 18 (translated by Edgar Goodspeed)
If you do a kindness, know to whom you are doing it, and you will be thanked for your good deeds.  If you do a kindness to the devout, you will be repaid, if not by him, yet by the Most High.  The one who persists in evil will not prosper, nor the one who will not give to charity.  Give to the devout, and do not help the sinner; do kindnesses to the humble-minded, and do not give to the ungodly; hold back the bread, and do not give it to them, so that they may not come to control you with it; for you will experience twice as much evil for all the good you do them.  For the Most High hates sinners and will take vengeance on the ungodly.  Give to the one who is good, and do not help the sinner.  A friend cannot be proved in prosperity, nor an enemy concealed in adversity.  When someone prospers, his enemies are grieved, and when someone is unfortunate, even his friend separates from him.  Never trust your enemy, for his wickedness is like bronze that rusts; even if he acts humbly, and goes about bent over, look out for yourself, and be on your guard against him.  You must be to him like one who wipes a mirror clean, and you must make sure that it is not all covered with rust.  Do not place him at your side, or he may overthrow you and take your place.  Do not seat him at your right hand, or he may try to get your seat, and you may at last learn the truth of what I say, and be stung by my words.  Who pities a snake-charmer when he is bitten, or all those who have to do with wild animals?  In the same way who will pity a person who approaches a sinner, and mingles with his sins?  He will stay with you for a while, but if you fall, he will not hold out.  An enemy will speak sweetly with his lips, but in his heart he will plan to throw you into a pit.  An enemy will shed tears with his eyes, but if he gets a chance, he cannot get blood enough.  If misfortune overtakes you, you will find him there before you, and while he is pretending to help you, he will trip you up.  He will shake his head and clap his hands, and whisper a great deal, and change his expression toward you.

More on Oil spill (Southwest Michigan): Kalamazoo & Battle Creek

from the Detroit Free Press online reporting (July 30, 2010):
Officials with Enbridge Energy Partners which owns the pipeline said they had contained the leak site along a tributary near Marshall, MI.  But oil was visible to reporters Thursday afternoon beyond a containment dike flowing down the tributary to the Kalamazoo River. . .At the other end of the slick, containment equipment was visible in the river at the entrance near Morrow Lake near Kalamazoo, an important backstop for cleanup efforts.  Residents on the lake reported smelling the oil, as well.  EPA officials said that Lake Michigan appears safe, as do the drinking water sources for the city of Kalamazoo. . .Yet although Enbridge officials say a temporary dike has stopped oil from flowing into streams, a flight over the spill area by Free Press reporters showed continued problems, including an oily sheen flowing in colorful ribbons down much of the Kalamazoo River through Battle Creek and beyond.  Many of the marshy shoreline areas were marked by oily tar deposits easily visible from 1,000 feet up.  Workers could be seen maneuvering booms and absorbent materials into the river but the oil continued to appear almost unabated in many areas.  Tanker trucks parked on bridges continued to suck out oil with hoses.  In other spots, crews in airboats worked booms in the river and marshes.  At the apparent leak source, a crew used earth-moving equipment to excavate a hole in the ground surrounded by orange fencing.  Nearby, oil pooled in large quantities.  .  . West of Battle Creek, the oil sheen became less visible Thursday as the river reached Morrow Lake.  Crews with booms could be seen on both the approach into the lake and at the west end of the lake, where booms were positioned in a pyramid formation.  .  . About 30-50 homes have been recommended for evacuation near Marshall.  County and state officials continue to monitor other areas.  There is a drinking water advisory for about 100 homes within 200 feet of the river in Calhoun county and bottled water is available for residents.  The slick is a problem on the surface, but probably not a threat for drinking water supplies, which are drawn from aquifers 70 to 100 feet down, said Alan Steinman, Director of the Annis Water Resources Institute at Grand Valley State University. . .The greater long-term ecological risk may be in the wetlands along the tributaries of the river, Steinman said.  "That's key habitat.  The bugs are living, the fish are spawning.  It's going to last a long time."

Ben Sira - chapter 11

11: 1 - 34 (translated by Edgar Goodspeed)
The wisdom of the humble lifts their heads high and seats them among the great.  Do not praise an individual for their good looks, and do not detest anyone because of appearance.  The bee is one of the smallest of winged creatures, but what she produces is the greatest of sweets!  Do not boast of the clothes you wear, and do not be uplifted when you are honored, for the works of the Lord are marvelous, and His doings are hidden from humankind.   Many sovereigns have had to sit on the ground, while one who was never thought of has assumed the diadem.  Many rulers have been utterly disgraced, and the honored have been delivered into the hands of others.
Do not find fault before you investigate, first understand, and then rebuke.  Do not answer before you hear, and do not interrupt in the middle of what is being said.  Do not quarrel about a matter that does not concern you, and when sinners judge, do not sit in council with them.
My child, do not busy yourself about many things.  If you multiply your activities, you will not be held guiltless, and if you pursue, you will not overtake, and you will not escape by running away.  There are those who toil and labor and hurry and are all the worse off.  There are others who are slow and need help, lack strength, and have plenty of poverty.  Yet the eyes of the Lord look favorably on them, and He lifts them up out of their position/condition and lifts up their heads and many wonder at them.
Good and evil, life and death, poverty and wealth are from the Lord.  What the Lord gives stays by the godly, and what He approves will always prosper.  One grows rich by carefulness and gree, and this will be his reward: when he says, "Now I can rest, and enjoy my goods," he does not know when the time will come when he will die and leave them to others.
Stand by your agreement, and attend to it, and grow old in your work.  Do not wonder at the doings of the sinner, but trust in the Lord and stick to your work.  For it is easy in the Lord's eyes swiftly and suddenly to make the poor rich.  The blessing of the Lord rests on the wages of the godly; and He quickly makes His blessing flourish.  Do not say, "What do I need, and from this time on what can benefit me?"  Do not say, "I have enough, and from this time on how can I be injured?"  In prosperity one forgets misfortune.  For it is easy in the Lord's sight when a man dies to repay him according to his ways.  An hour of hardship makes one forget enjoyment, and when a man dies, what he has done is disclosed.  Count no one happy before his death, and a man will be known by his children.
Do not bring any and everyone to your home, for the treacherous have many wiles.  The mind of the proud is like a decoy partridge in a cage, and like a spy, they look for your downfall; for they try to entrap you, turning good into evil, and they find fault with your favorite things.   A spark of fire kindles a whole heap of coals, and a sinful man lies in wait for blood.  Beware of evildoers, for they contrive wickedness, and they will bring blame on you forever.  If you entertain strangers, they will disturb and torment you and will estrange you from your home/family.

Three hikers (Zagros Mountains, Iraqi Kurdistan) - imprisoned now 365 days later

Shane Bauer, 27, his fiancee Sara Shourd, and their friend Josh Fattal, 27 remain in Iranian prison cells one year after they accidentally crossed the unmarked border into Iran.  They were arrested on suspicion of espionage and taken to notorious Evin Prison in Teheran. . .Since the hikers were captured, their mothers have tirelessly campaigned for their release; they have not been formally charged with a crime nor taken to trial.  Demonstrators, some dressed as hikers, are expected to march in front of the Iranian embassy in New York City on Friday.  The hikers' mothers and the director of the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran are expected to speak to the rally.  Protests are also scheduled in 30 cities Saturday; supporters who can't attend are urged to sign a Facebook petition for their release.  .  .

1,000,000 gallons of oil may be dumped in Kalamazoo River (near Battle Creek, Michigan)

Federal EPA officials are stating that a major oil spill happened Tuesday July 27 -- in an updated estimate, they released their estimated data on Enbridge, Inc. which owns the oil pipeline.  Governor Jennifer Granholm warned of a tragedy of historic proportions if it reaches Lake Michigan (80 miles downstream from site of spill-leakage). . .

Ben Sira - chapter 10

10: 1 - 31 (Edgar Goodspeed translation)
A wise judge will instruct his people, and the rule of an intelligent person is well ordered.  Like the judge of a people are his officers, and like the governor of a city are all who live in it.  An uneducated king ruins his people, but a city becomes populous through the understanding of its rulers.  Authority over the earth is in the hands of the Lord, and in due time He will set over it one who will serve his purpose.  Human success is in the hands of the Lord, and He makes His glory rest on the person of the scribe/lawgiver.  Do not get angry with your neighbor for any misdeed, and do not gain your end by acts of violence.  Pride is detested in the sight of the Lord and to mortals, and injustice is wrong in the sight of both.  Sovereignty passes from one nation to another because of injustice and violence and greed for money.  Why are dust and ashes proud? Even in life the human body decays.  There is a long illness -- the doctor is baffled; the king of today will die tomorrow.  For when one is dead, reptiles, animals, and worms become his portion.  A man begins to be proud when he departs from the Lord, and his heart forsakes his Creator.  For pride begins with sin, and the one who clings to it will rain down abominations.  For this reason, the Lord brings unheard-of calamities upon them, and overturns them utterly.  The Lord tears down the thrones of rulers, and seats the humble-minded in their places.  The Lord plucks up nations by the roots, and plants the lowly in their places.  The Lord overturns heathen countries, and destroys them down to the foundations of the earth.  He takes some of them away, and destroys them, and makes the memory of them cease from the earth.  Pride was not created for men, nor fierce anger for those who are born of women.  What is an honorable posterity?  A human posterity!  What is an honorable posterity?  Those who fear the Lord.  What is a base/unworthy posterity?  A human posterity!  What is an honorable posterity?  Those who break the commandments.  Among family members, their leader is honored, and those who fear the Lord are honored in His eyes.  Rich and distinguished and poor alike -- their glory is the fear of the Lord.  It is not right to slight a poor man who has understanding, and it is not proper to honor a sinful man.  Prince, judge, and ruler are honored, but none of them is greater than the one who fears the Lord.  Free citizens will wait on a wise servant and an intelligent person will not object.  Do not parade your wisdom when you are at work, and do not commend yourself when you are in need; it is better to work and have plenty of everything, than to go about commending yourself but in want of bread.  My child, glorify your soul with meekness, and show it such honor as it deserves.  Who can justify those who condemn/sin against themselves?  And who can honor those who dishonor themselves/disgrace their own lives?  A poor man is honored for his knowledge and a rich man is honored for his wealth.  One who is honored in poverty, how much more in wealth?  And one who is dishonored in wealth, how much more in poverty?

Ben Sira - chapter 9

9: 1 - 18 (translated by Edgar Goodspeed)
Do not be jealous about the wife of your bosom, and do not teach her an evil lesson, to your own hurt. Do not give your soul to a woman, so that she will trample on your strength. Do not meet a prostitute, or you may fall into her snares. Do not associate with a woman singer, or you may be caught by her wiles. Do not look closely at a virgin, or you may be entrapped in penalties on her account. Do not give yourself to prostitutes, so that you may not lose your inheritance. Do not look around in the streets of the city, and do not wander about the unfrequented parts of it. Avert your eyes from a beautiful woman, and do not look clsely at beauty that belongs to someone else. Many have been led astray by a woman's beauty, and love is kindled by it like a fire. Do not ever sit at table with a married woman, and do not feast and drink with her, or your heart may turn away to her, and you may slip into spiritual ruin.
Do not forsake old friends, for new ones are not equal to them. A new friend is new wine; when it grows old, you will enjoy drinking it. Do not envy the glory of a sinner; for you do not know what disaster awaits him. Do not share in the satisfaction of ungodly men, remember that until death they will not be found upright. Keep far from those who hve the power of life and death. If you do approach them, do not offend them, so that they may not take away your life. Understand that you are striding along among traps, and walking on the city battlements. As far as you can, aim to know your neighbors, and take counsel with those who are wise. Let your discussion be with intelligent people and all your discourse about the Law of the Most High. Let the righteous be your companions at table, and let your exultation be in the fear of the Lord. It is for the skill of the artisan that a piece of work is commended, and a ruler of the poeple is proved wise by his words. The loud of mouth are dreaded in their city, and the one who is rash in speech is hated.

Ben Sira - chapter 8

8: 1 - 19 (Edgar Goodspeed translation)
Do not quarrel with the powerful, or you may fall into their hands.  Do not quarrel with the rich, in case their resources outweigh yours.  Gold has been the destruction of many, and perverted the minds of kings.  Do not argue with the loud of mouth and do not heap wood on their fire.  Do not make sport of an uneducated man, or you may dishonor your own forefathers.  Do not reproach one who is turning away from sin; remember that we all deserve punishment.  Do not disdain one who is old, for some of us are growing old.  Do not rejoice over any one's death; remember that we must all die.  Do not neglect the discourse of the sages, but busy yourself with their proverbs; for from them you will gain instruction, adn learn to serve princes.  Do not ignore the discourse of the aged, for they themselves learned from their parents/ancestors.  For from them you will gain understanding, and learn to return an answer in your time of need.  Do not kindle the coals of a sinner, or you may be burned in their flaming fire.  Do not let the insolent bring you to your feet, or they may lie in ambush against your words.  Do not lend to one who is stronger than you; but if you do lend anything, count it as a loss.  Do not give surety beyond your means, and if you give surety, regard it as something you will have to pay.  Do not go to law against a judge; for in view of his dignity they will decide for him.  Do not go traveling with the reckless, or they will be burdensome to you; for they will act as they please, and through their folly you will perish with them.  Do not pick a fight with the quick-tempered, and do not journey with them through lonely country, because bloodshed means nothing to them, and where no help is at hand, they will strike you down.  Do not consult with fools, for they cannot keep a secret.  In the presence of strangers do nothing that is to be kept secret, for you do not know what they will divulge.  Do not reveal your thoughts to anyone, or you may drive away your happiness / and let him not return a favor to you (Greek).

Ben Sira - chapter 7

7: 1 - 36 (translated by Edgar Goodspeed)
Do no evil, and evil will not overtake you.  Avoid what is wrong, and it will turn away from you.  My son, do not sow among the furrows of iniquity, and you will not reap them sevenfold.  Do not ask the Lord for pre-eminence, or the king for a seat of honor.  Do not justify yourself in the sight of the Lord, or show off your wisdom before the king; do not seek to be made a judge, or you may not be able to put down wrongdoing; or you may show partiality to the powerful, and put a stumbling block in the way of your own uprightness.  do not sin against the multitude of the city, and do not disgrace yourself among the throng.  Do not repeat a sin, for with even one offense you are not innocent.  Do not say, "He will consider the number of my offerings, and when I sacrifice to the Most High God, He will accept it."  do not be discouraged about your prayers, and do not fail to give to charity.  Do not laugh at a person who is in bitterness of spirit; for there is One who can humble and can exalt!  Do not devise a lie against your brother, or do such a thing to your friend.  Do not consent to utter any lie, for the practice of it is not beneficial.  Do not indulge in idle talk in the throng of elders, and do not repeat yourself when you pray.  Do not hate hard work, or farming which was created by the Most High.  Do not be counted in the crowd of sinners; remember that wrath will not delay.  Humble your heart exceedingly , for fire and worms are the punishment of the ungodly.  Do not exchange a friend for an advantage, or a real brother for the gold of Ophir.  Do not dismiss a wife, good wife, for her charm is worth more than gold.  Do not ill-treat a slave who does his work faithfully, or hired laborers who devote themselves to their task.  Let your soul love intelligent slaves / Love a wise slave as yourself; do not withhold from them their freedom.  If you have cattle, look after them, and if they are profitable, keep them.  If you have children, discipline them, and from their youth up bend their necks.  If you have daughters, look after their chastity (Greek: body), and do not show yourself too indulgently with them.  If you give your daughter in marriage, you will have done a great thing, but bestow her on a man of understanding.  If you have a wife after your own heart, do not divorce her; but do not trust yourself to one whom you hate.  Honor your father with your whole heart, and do not forget the pangs of your mother.  Remember that it was of them you were born, and how can you requite them for what they have done for you?  Honor the Lord with all your soul, and revere his priests.   Love Him who made you with all your strength, and do not forsake his ministers.  Fear the Lord and honor the priest, and give him his portion, as you were commanded, the first fruits, and the sin offering, and the gift of the shoulders, and the sacrifice of consecration, and the first fruits of holy things.  Stretch out your hand to the poor also, that your blessing may be accomplished.  A present pleases all the living, and in the case of the dead, do not withhold your kindness.  Do not be wanting to those who weep, but mourn with those who mourn.  Do not hesitate to visit the sick, for you will be loved for such acts.  In all that you say remember your end, and you will never sin.

Ben Sira - chapter 6

translation by Edgar Goodspeed (as continued from 5:1 - 6:1)

6:2 - 37
Do not exalt yourself in your soul's designs, so that your soul may not be torn in pieces like a bull; if you eat up your leaves, you will destroy your fruit, and leave yourself like a dried-up tree. A wicked heart will destroy its possessor, and fill his enemies with malignant joy.
Sweet speech makes many friends, and a polite tongue multiplies courtesy. Let those who are at peace with you be many, but let your advisers be one in a thousand. If you make a friend, make one only after testing him, and do not be in a hurry to confide in him. There are friends who are so when it suits their conveniences, who will not stand by you when you are in trouble. And there are friends who turn into enemies, and reveal quarrels to your discredit. and there are friends who will sit at your table, but will not stand by you when you are in trouble. they will make themselves at home, as long as you are prosperous, and will give orders to your servants; if you come down in the world, they will take sides against you, and hide themselves from your presence. Separate yourself from your enemies, and beware of your friends. A faithful friend is a strong protection; a man who has found one has found a treasure. A faithful friend is beyond price, and his value cannot be weighed. A faithful friend is a life-giving medicine, and those who fear the Lord will find it. The man who fears the Lord will make genuine friendships, for to him his neighbor is like himself.
My child, from your youth up cultivate education, and you will keep on finding wisdom until you are gray. Approach her like a man who plows and sows, and wait for her abundant crops. For in cultivating her, you will toil but little, and soon you will eat her produce. She seems very harsh, to the undisciplined, and a thoughtless man cannot abide her. She will rest on him like a great stone to test him, and he will not delay to throw her off. For wisdom is what her name implies, and to most mortals she is invisible. Listen, my child and accept my opinion, and do not refuse my advice. Put your feet into her fetters, and you neck into her collar. Put your shoulder under her and carry her, and do not weary of her chains; come to her with all your heart, and follow her ways with all your might. Inquire and search, and she will be made known to you, and when you have grasped her, do not let her go. For at last you will find the rest she gives, and you will find her turning into gladness. Her fetters will become your strong defense, and her collars a splendid robe. She wears gold ornaments, and her chains are purple threat; you will put her on like a splendid robe, and put her on your head like a victor's wreath. My child, if you wish, you can be educated. And if you devote yourself to it, you can become shrewd. If you love to hear, you will receive. And if you listen, you will be wise. Take your stand in the throng of elders; which of them is wise? Attach yourself to him. Be willing to listen to every godly discourse, and do not let any wise proverbs escape you. If you see a person of understanding, go to him early, and let your feet wear out his doorstep. Think about the statutes of the Lord, and constantly meditate on his commandments. He will strengthen your mind, and the wisdom you desire will be given you.

Ben Sira, chapter 5

(Edgar Goodspeed translation)
5: 1 - 6:1
Do not set your heart on your wealth, and do not say, "It is enough for me." Do not follow your soul and your strength and pursue the desires of your heart. Do not say, "Who can have power over me?" For the Lord will certainly take vengeance. Do not say, "I sinned, yet what happened to me?" for the Lord is long-suffering. As for atonement for the multitude of my sins." For mercy and wrath are both with him, And His anger will rest upon sinners. Do not put off turning back to the Lord, and do not postpone it from day to day; for the Lord's wrath will suddenly come forth, and in the time of vengeance you will perish. Do not set your heart on unrighteous gain, for it will be of no benefit to you in the time of misfortune. Do not winnow in every wind, and do not follow every path; that is what the deceitful sinner does.
Let what you say be one. Be quick to hear, and make your reply with patience. If you possess understanding, answer your neighbor, but if you do not have it, keep your hand over your mouth! Both glory and disgrace come from speaking, and a mortal's tongue is his downfall. Do not be known as a whisperer, and do not set an ambush with your tongue, for shame rests upon the thief, and evil condemnation on the double-tongued. Do not be ignorant in great matters or in small,
6:1 (continued from previous verse 5:15) - And do not prove an enemy instead of a friend; for an evil name incurs disgrace and reproach; so does a sinner who is double-tongued.

Ben Sira - Chapter 4

(translation by Edgar Goodspeed)
4: 1 - 31
My child, do not defraud the poor of their living, and do not make the eyes of the needy wait.  Do not pain a hungry heart, and do not anger one who is in want.  Do not increase the troubles of a mind that is incensed, and do not put off giving to the needy.  Do not refuse a suppliant in his trouble, and do not avert your face from the poor.  Do not turn your eyes away from a beggar, and do not give anyone cause to curse you, for if he curses you in the bitterness of his spirit, Their creator will hear their prayer.  Make yourself beloved in the congregation, and bow your head to a great personage; Give a hearing to what the poor say, and give them a peaceful and gentle anwer.  Rescue a man who is being wronged from the hand of the wrongdoer, and do not be faint-hearted about giving your judgment.  Be like a father to the fatherless, and take the place of a husband to their mother.  Then you will be like a son of the Most High, and He will show you more than a mother's love.
Wisdom makes her sons exalted, and lays hold of those who seek her.  Whoever loves her loves life, and those who seek her early will be filled with joy.  Whoever holds her fast will win glory; the Lord will bless every house He enters.  Those who serve her serve the Holy One, and the Lord loves those who love her.  Whoever obeys her will judge the heathen, and whoever attend to her will dwell in security.  If he trusts in her, he will possess her, and his descendants will retain possession of her.   For at first she will go with him in devious ways, she will bring fear and cowardice upon him, and torment him with her discipline, until she can trust in his soul, and test him with her judgments.  Then she will come straight back to him again, and make him glad, and reveal her secrets to him.   If he wanders off, she will forsake him, and hand him over to his downfall.
Watch your opportunity and guard against evil, and do not have to feel shame for your soul.  For there is a shame that brings sin, and there is a shame that is glory and favor.  Show regard for no one at the expense of your soul, and respect no one, to your own downfall.  Do not refrain from speaking when it is needed: for wisdom is known through speech, and instruction through the spoken word.  Do not contradict the truth, but feel shame for your want of education.  Do not be ashamed to confess your sins, and do not try to force back the current of a river.  Do not make yourself a bed for a fool, and do not show partiality for a ruler; contend for the truth to the death, and the Lord will fight for you.  Do not be rash in speech, but slothful and slack in action.  Do not be like a lion at home, and unreasonable with your servants.  Do not stretch your hand out to receive, but close it when you should repay.

Ben Sira - chapter 3

(translation by Edgar Goodspeed)
3: 1 - 31
Listen to me, your father, O children, and act in such a way that you may be preserved. for the Lord has glorified the father above his children, and he has established the rights of the mother over her sons. Those who provide parents atone for their sins and those who respect their mother are like those who lay up treasure. Those who provide for their father will be gladdened by their children, and will be heard on the day that they pray. Those who show their father honor will have long lives, and those who listen to the Lord will refresh their mother and will serve their parents as their masters. Honor your father in word and deed, so that his blessing may attend you. For a father's blessing establishes the houses of his children, but a mother's curse uproots their foundations. do not glority yourself by dishonoring your father, for your father's disgrace is no glory to you. for a man's glory arises from honoring his father, and a neglected mother is a reproach to her children. My child, help your father in his old age, and do not grieve him, as long as he lives. If his understanding fails, be considerate, and do not humiliate him, when you are in all your strength. Charity given to a father will not be forgotten, and will build you up a further atonement for your sins. When you are in trouble, you will be remembered; like frost in sunshine your sins will melt away. Whoever deserts a father is like a blasphemer, and whoever angers a mother is cursed by the Lord. My child, carry on your business in humility, and you will be loved by those whom God accepts. The greater you are, the more you must practice humility, and you will find favor with the Lord. For the Lord's power is great, and he is glorified by the humble-minded. do not seek for what is too hard for you, and do not investigate what is beyond your strength; think of the commands that have been given you, for you have no need of the things that are hidden. Do not waste your labor on what is superfluous to your work, for more than you can understand has been shown you. For many have been led astray by their imagination, and wicked fancy has made their minds slip. It will go hard with an obstinate heart at the end, and the man who loves danger will perish through it. An obstinate heart will be loaded with troubles, and the sinner adds sin to sins. There is no cure for the misfortune of the proud, for a wicked plant has taken root in him. The mind of the intelligent appreciates proverbs, and an attentive ear is the desire of the wise. As water will quench a blazing fire, so charity will atone for sin. Those who repay favors give thought to the future; when they fall they will find support.

Like other Biblical writings / an exception to other Wisdom writings

From the introductory comments in the NRSV Bible (New Oxford Annotated, 1991)
ALTHOUGH ben Sira (also known as Sirach, also known as Ecclesiasticus) lacks any clear structure, it resembles the book of Proverbs in many ways. It stresses characteristic wisdom teachings: proper speech, riches and poverty, honesty, diligence, choice of friends, sin and death, retribution, and wisdom itself. Unlike Proverbs 10 and following chapters, individual proverbs are not set apart, but are incorporated into smooth-flowing poems of some length (often in accordance with the numbers of letters in the Hebrew alphabet). The doctrine is surprisingly traditional, almost as if Job and Ecclesiastes had never been written. Ben Sira is not unaware of the problem of suffering but he is a firm believer in the justice of divine retribution. God will reward everyone according to one's deserts (15.11 - 16.23). There is no intimation of a future life with God in the Hebrew text; rather all go to Sheol (14.12-19; 38.16-23). This is the usual Hebrew teaching, which understood immortality only in terms of one's progeny and good name (44.13-15). Traditionally, wisdom literature never appealed to Israel's sacred history or covenant. This book is an outstanding exception, in view of his "Praise of the Ancestors" (Chapters 44-50) and his identification of personified wisdom with the Torah or Law (24.23). At the same time, ben Sira's book belongs definitely to the genre of wisdom literature with its stress on the lessons of experience and on the "fear of the Lord."

Ben Sira - chapter 2

2: 1 - 18 (translated by Edgar Goodspeed)
My child, if you come to serve the Lord, prepare yourself to be tried. Set your heart right and be firm, and do not be hasty when things go against you; hold fast to Him, and do not forsake Him, so that you may be honored when your life ends. Accept whatever happens to you, and be patient in humiliating vicissitudes. For gold is tested with fire, and men who are approved must be tested in the furnace of humliation. Have faith in Him, and He will help you; make your ways straight, and put your hope in Him. You who fear the Lord, wait for His mercy, and do not turn aside, or you will fall. You who fear the Lord, wait for His mercy, and do not turn aside, or you will fall. You who fear the Lord, have faith in Him, and you will not lose your reward. You who fear the Lord, hope for His blessings, and for everlasting joy and mercy. Look at the generations of antiquity and see, who that put his trust in the Lord was ever put to shame? Or who that persevered in the fear of the Lord was ever forsaken? Or who that called upon Him was overlooked by Him? For the Lord is merciful and has pity, and forgives sins and delivers in times of affliction. Alas for cowardly hearts and palsied hands! And for a sinner who follows two paths! Alas for a faint heart, for it does not believe; therefore it will not be protected. Alas for you, who have lost your steadfastness! What will you do when the Lord visits you? Those who fear the Lord will not disobey His words, and those who love Him will keep His ways. Those who fear the Lord will seek His favor, and those who love Him will be filled with the Law. Those who fear the Lord will prepare their hearts, and will humble their souls before Him. "Let us fall into the Lord's hands, and not into the hands of mortals." For as His majesty is, so is His mercy also, and equal to His name are His works!

Ben Sira - - also called Sirach -- also called Ecclesiasticus

Prologue -- (excerpt from Edgar Goodspeed translation in The Apocrypha):
"Since many great things have been communicated to us through the Law and the Prophets, and the others who followed after them. . .my grandfather Jeshua, after attaining considerable proficiency in them, was led to write on his own account something in the line of instruction and wisdom, so that lovers of learning. . .might make still greater progress in living in accordance with the Law. . .I thought it absolutely necessary that I should myself devote diligence and labor to the translation of this book, devoting long hours and expert knowledge . . . for those also, who in the land where they are visiting, being already prepared in character to live in accordance with the Law, desire to advance in learning."
1: 1 - 30
All wisdom comes from the Lord, and remains with him forever. The sands of the sea and the drops of rain and the days of eternity -- who can count them?
The heights of the heavens, and the breadth of the earth, and the deep, and wisdom -- who can track them out?
Wisdom was created before them all, and sound intelligence from eternity. To whom has the source of wisdom been revealed? And who knows her devices?
There is but one who is wise, a very terrible one, seated upon his throne; the Lord Himself created her; He saw her and counted her, and poured her out upon all He made; upon all mankind, as He chose to bestow her; but He supplied her liberally to those who loved Him.
To fear the Lord is a glory and a ground of exultation; a joy and a crown of ecstasy. To fear the Lord delights the heart, and brings gladness and joy and long life. The man who fears the Lord will have a happy end, and be blessed in the day of his death. To fear the Lord is the source of wisdom and she was created with the faithful in the womb. She has built her nest among men as a foundation from eternity, and among their posterity she will be held in trust. To fear the Lord is to be satisfied with wisdom, for she intoxicates them with her fruits. She will fill all their houses with desirable things, and their storehouse with her produce; to fear the Lord is a crown of wisdom, making peace and healing health flourish. He beheld her and counted her; He rained down understanding and sound knowledge, and increased the glory of those who possessed her. To fear the Lord is the root of wisdom, and her branches are long life. Unrighteous anger can never be excused, for the weight of a man's anger drags him down. A patient man will control himself for a while, and afterward joy will break out. He will repress his words for a time, and the lips of many will tell of his understanding. In the storehouses of wisdom there are wise proverbs, but godliness is a detestation to the irreligious. If you desire wisdom, keep the commandments, and the Lord will supply you with her liberally. For to fear the Lord is wisdom and education, and faith and meekness win his approval. Do not disobey the fear of the Lord, and do not approach it with a divided heart. Do not be a hypocrite in the mouths of men, and take heed to your own lips. Do not exalt yourself, or you may fall, and bring disgrace upon yourself; and the Lord will reveal your secrets and prostrate you before all the congregation, because you did not come to the fear of the Lord, but your heart was full of deceit."

The Higher Wisdom of Scripture -- application of Wisdom of Solomon 6:24

In his work on Meaningfulness of Scripture and our understanding of its signs and images (On Christian Doctrine), Augustine wrote this exposition of what is the "salvation of the world":
"One who must speak with wisdom, if s/he is unable to do so eloquently, must absolutely follow the word of the Scriptures closely.  The poorer he is in himself, the more necessary it is that he be rich in the Scriptures, so as to demonstrate, using them, what he says with his own words.  And one who is inferior in speaking will in some way grow, thanks to the testimony of what is superior.  In fact, the one less able to delight by speaking will delight by demonstrating.  One who makes an effort to speak not only with wisdom but also with eloquence will be even more useful if he is skilled in both.  Willingly would I allow that a person whom I counsel to follow the masters of rhetorical art read, listen to, or practice imitating the eloquent, because those who are read or listened to are known for speaking or for having spoken not only eloquently but also wisely and truly.  In fact, those who speak with eloquence do so attractively, whereas those who speak with wisdom are listened to for salvation.  For this reason, Scripture [Wisdom 6:24] does not say, 'an abundance of those who are eloquent,' but it says 'AN ABUNDANCE OF THE WISE IS the salvation of the world!'" -- translated by Sever J. Voicu for the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture, Volume XV - published 2010 by InterVarsity Press, Downers Grove, Illinois.

What did Origen write about "Wisdom of Solomon" (in Fifth Book of Contra Celsum)?

This is from the magisterial translation and editing of Henry Chadwick (Book V, section 29: pages 286-7:Cambridge Univ. Press text): "In the book entitled the Wisdom of Solomon, speaking of wisdom and the people who lived at the time of the confusion of languages, when the division of the nations of earth took place, the following is said of wisdom: 'Moreover, when nations consenting together in wickedness had been confounded, she knew the righteous man and preserved him blameless unto God, and kept him strong when his heart yearned toward his child' (Chapter 10, verse 5).  .  . We have much of a mysterious nature to say about this, to which the quotation applies ('it is good to hide the mystery of a king' : Tobit 12:7).  For we do not want the truth about the way in which souls became bound to a body (though not by reincarnation) to be cast before an uneducated audience, nor that holy things should be given to the dogs, nor that pearls be cast before swine (Matt. 7:6).  For that would be impious, as it implies a betrayal of the secret oracles of the wisdom of God. . .'Wisdom will not enter into a soul that devises evil, nor dwell in a body that is held in pledge by sin. (Wisdom 7:26)'  It is enough to give an account of the doctrines which are obscurely set forth under the guise of a story by following the course of it, in order that those who have the ability may work out the meaning of the passage for themselves"

From CONTRA CELSUM

Conclusion, Wisdom of Solomon

19: 1 - 22 (translation by Edgar J. Goodspeed)
"But, on the ungodly, pitiless anger came to the uttermost, for God knew their future beforehand, that after permitting them to go away, and sending them off in haste, they would change their minds and pursue/ they had changed their minds to permit.  For while they were still busy with their mourning, and were lamenting beside the graves of the dead, they involved themselves in another foolish design, and pursued as runaways those whom they had driven out with entreaties.
For the fate they deserved dragged them on to this end, and made them forget what had happened, so that they should make up the punishment that their torments lacked, and your people should experience / accomplish an incredible journey, while they themselves should find a strange death.  For the whole creation in its own kind was reshaped anew, in obedience to Your commands, so that your children might be protected unharmed.  The cloud was seen that overshadowed the camp, and the emergence of dry land where water had stood before, an unobstructed road out of the Red Sea, and a grassy plain out of the raging billow; through which those who were protected by Your hand passed over as a nation, witnessing marvelous portents.  For they ranged like horses and skipped like lambs, praising You, Lord, who had delivered them.  For they still remembered the things in their sojourning, how instead of the birth of animals the earth brought forth gnats, and instead of aquatic creatures the river vomited up a host of frogs.  But later they saw a new kind/ production of birds also, when moved by appetite they asked for delicacies; for quails came up from the sea to their relief.  And those punishments came upon the sinners not without premonitory signs, in the violence of the thunders; for they suffered justly through their own wickedness, for they exhibited a more bitter hatred of strangers.  For some would not receive strangers, when they came to them, but these men made slaves of guests who showed them kindness.  And not only so, but those others shall have some consideration for those they received with such hostility were aliends; but these, though they had welcomed the others with feasting, afflicted those who had already shared the same rights with them, with dreadful labors.  And they were stricken with loss of sight too, like those others, at the upright man's door, when, surrounded with yawning darkness, each one sought the way through his own doors.  For the elements changing places with one another, just as on a harp the notes vary the character of the time, yet keep the pitch (unclear meaning), as one may accurately infer from the observation of what happened; for land animals were turned into water creatures, and swimming things changed to the land; fire retained its power in water, and water forgot its quenching property.  Contrariwise, flames did not wither the flesh of perishable animals that walked about among them, nor was the easily melting ice-like kind of immortal food melted.  For in everything, You, Lord, magnified and glorified Your people, and You did not neglect them, but stood by them at every time and place."

Wisdom of Solomon, chapter 18

Chapter 18: 1 - 25 (translated by Edgar Goodspeed)
"But Your holy ones enjoyed a very great light; and their enemies, hearing their voices but not seeing their forms, thought them happy, because they had not suffered, but they were thankful because the holy, though they had before them been wronged, did not hurt them, and prayed /to be separated from them/ having been ones separated from them.
Therefore You provided a blazing pillar as guide on Your people's unknown journey, and an unharmful sun for their honorable exile. For their enemies deserved to be deprived of light and imprisoned in darkness who had kept Your children shut up, through whom the imperishable light of the Law was to be given to the world. When they plotted to kill the babies of the holy ones, though one child had been exposed and saved, to rebuke them You took from them a multitude of their children, and destroyed them all together in a mighty flood. That night was made known to our forefathers beforehand, so that they should know certainly what oaths they had believed, and rejoice. The preservation of the upright and the destruction of their enemies were expected by Your people; for in punishing their adversaries, You called us to You and glorified us. For in secret the holy children of good people offered the sacrifice, and with one accord agreed to the divine law, that they should share alike the same blessings and dangers, and/ were already beginning to sing the praises of their forefathers/ the ancesters already leading the songs of praise / when there echoed back the discordant shout of their enemies, and the piteous sound of lamentation for children spread abroad; but slave was punished with master, with the same penalty, and the commoner suffered the same as the king, and all of them together under one form/name of death had countless corpses. For those who were alive were not even enough to bury them, for in one instant their most valued children were destroyed. For though they disbelieved everything because of their enchantments, when the first-born were destroyed, they acknowledged that the people was God's son/child. For when gentle silence enveloped everything, and night was midway of her swift course, Your all-powerful Word/Logos leaped from heaven, from the royal throne, a stern warrior, into the midst of the doomed land, carrying for a sharp sword Your undisguised command, and stood still, and filled all things with death, and touched heaven but walked upon the earth. Then suddenly apparitions in dreadful dreams startled them, and unlooked-for fears assailed them, and one thrown here half-dead, another there, showed why they were dying, for the dreams that had alarmed them warned them of it, so that they should not perish without knowing why they suffered.
But the experience of death affected the upright also, and a multitude were destroyed in the desert. But the wrath did not continue long. For a blameless man hurried to fight in their defense, bringing the great shield of his ministering, prayer and the propitiation of incense; he withstood that wrath and put an end to the disaster, showing that he was a servant of Yours; but he overcame the anger/wrath not by bodily strength, nor by force of arms, but by his word he (Aaron) subdued the chastiser, when he appealed to the oaths and agreements given to the forefathers. For when the dead had already fallen on one another in heaps, he stood between and cut the wrath short and cut off its way to the living. For on his long robe was the whole world, and the glories of the forefathers were in the carving of the four rows of stones, and Your majesty was on the diadem upon his head, before these the destroyer gave way, and these he feared, for that experience of wrath was enough by itself.

1993 hymn with tune by Thomas Tallis (b. 1505) - lyric by Brian Wren

Third hymn sung briskly and enthusiastically from 10:41-44 a.m. at St. John's UCC, Niles, Michigan:

"Go now in peace, through friends must part,
Your presence lives in every heart. Your gifts to us no words can tell; go now
in peace, in Christ go well!

Go now in hope, and hopeful stay, though shadowed valleys hide your way;
through good and evil, joy and pain, with God, in Spirit, you remain.

Go now in faith, through time and chance, untl we join the wedding dance as
partners of the Three-in-One, where all is ended and begun."

Peter Gomes sermon on Martha and Mary (Luke 10:38-42)

"In this short, deceptively simple vignette, Martha, who has welcomed Jesus into her home, asks him to tell her sister Mary, to help in the kitchen rather than sitting and listening to him in the living room. But instead, Jesus gently rebukes Martha, saying "Mary has chosen the bettter part." On the surface this Biblical story seems cut and dried: in a domestic dispute, one sister picks a fight and loses. There doesn't appear to be much for a preacher to work with.
At first the Preacher Peter Gomes (minister in the Memorial Church, Harvard University) sympathizes with Martha: "We all know the Marthas, those hardworking people without whom any movement or occasion would starve; churches especially thrive on their Marthas. Who will do the coffee hour? Martha. Who will do the washing up? Martha"
Thus, Martha does what anyone ought to do when a guest arrives: offer material hospitality. No wonder she was "distracted by many tasks" (verse 41). She is "a sympathetic sister for our time because she is in the business of activity and anxiety: the chief preoccupations of our age." . . .
In siding with Mary, Jesus does not say "that society would fall apart without the activity and anxiety of the Marthas of the world." Still, Jesus sides with Mary. She has her priorities right. When Jesus pays a call, Mary understands that the conventional rules of hospitality never apply. Mary knows the value of sitting at Jesus' feet. She knows where she is -- "in the presence of the Master, whose teachings were the staff of her life. . .When Jesus comes to call, things aren't at all the way they used to be, and neither should we be." Thanks be to our Stillspeaking God.

Wisdom of Solomon, chapter 17

17: 1 - 21 (Edgar Goodspeed translation)
For Your judgments are great and hard to set forth; therefore uninstructed souls went astray. For when lawless men thought they were oppressing a holy nation they lay shut up under their roofs, exiled from the eternal providence, prisoners of darkness and captives of the long night. For when they thought they were hidden in their secret sins by a dark veil of forgetfulness, they were scattered, terribly frightened, and appalled by specters. For even the inner chamber that held them did not protect them from fear, but appalling sounds rung around them, and somber ghosts appeared, with gloomy faces. And no fire was strong enough to succeed in giving them light, nor could the bright flames of the stars undertake to illumine that hateful night. Only there shone on them a fearful flame, of itself, and though dreadfully frightened at that sight when it could not be seen, they thought the things they beheld still worse. And the delusions of magic art were prostrate, and their boasted wisdom suffered a contemptuous rebuke, for those who claimed to drive away fears and troubles from sick souls were sick themselves with ridiculous fear. For if nothing alarming frightened them, yet scared by the creeping of vermin and the hissing of reptiles they died of fright, refusing to look even upon the air, which could not be escaped on any side. For wickedness is a cowardly thing, condemned by a witness of its own, and being distressed by conscience, has always exaggerated (uncertain word translated) hardships; for fear is nothing but the giving up of the reinforcements that come of reason, and as the expectation of them from within is deficient, it reckons its ignorance worse than the cause of the torment. But they, all through the night, which was really powerless, and came upon them from the recesses of a powerless Hades, sleeping the same sleep, were now driven by monstrous phantoms, and now paralyzed by their soul's surrender; for they were drenched in sudden, unlooked-for fear. Then whoever was there fell down and so was shut up and guarded in a prison not made of iron; for whether a man was a farmer or a shepherd, or a laborer whose work was in a wilderness, he was overtaken and suffered the unavoidable fate, for they were all bound with one chain of darkness. Whether there was a whistling wind, or a melodious sound of birds in spreading branches, or the regular noise of rushing water, or a harsh crashing of rocks thrown down, or the unseen running of bounding animals, or the sound of the most savage wild beasts roaring, or an echo thrown back from a hollow in the mountains, it paralyzed them with terror. for the whole world was bathed in bright light, and occupied in unhindered work; only over them was spread a heavy night, a picture of the darkness that was to receive them. But heavier than the darkness were they to themselves.

New Album - "Greatest Hits" -- gift from Becky

9 - 10 p.m. Listening to some of the 1990s - 2000s hits of a Nashville, TN group called "Lonestar" from the group who formed in the mid-1990s and had great success. Their big hit is "Amazed" (1997 song that was a great cross-over) and it is a worthy lyric/tune to the Barry Gibb song "Islands in the Stream" that was also a Country and Top 100 Billboard #1 for Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers.

Also to be commended are "I'm already there" (2002 song) and "Smile," "Tell her," and "With me."

Here's the Wiki article about this "Lonestar: Greatest Hits" as analyzed-interlinked for more information shared =

Wisdom of Solomon, chapter 16

16: 1-29 (Edgar Goodspeed translation)
Therefore these people were punished as they deserved through similar animals, and tormented with a multitude of animals/vermin. And instead of this punishment, You benefited Your people and to satisfy the desire of their appetite, you prepared something with a strange taste -- quails for food, so that those others, when they desired food, because of the hideousness of the things sent among them, should lose even the smallest appetite, while Your people, after being in want for a little while, should partake of something with a strange taste/delicacies. For it was necessary that an unescapable want should come upon those others for their tyrannical behavior, but these should only be shown how their enemies were tormented. For when the terrible fury of wild animals came upon Your people, and they were perishing by the bites of wriggling snakes (Numbers 21:6-9), Your wrath did not continue to the uttermost, but they were harassed for a little while to admonish them, for they had a token of preservation to remind them of the commandment of Your law; for the one who turned toward it was saved not because of what he saw, but because of You, who are the Presever/Savior of all.
And by this, You persuaded our enemies that You are the one who saves from every evil. For they were killed by the bites of locusts and flies, and no cure/healng was found for their life, for they deserved to be punished by such means. But not even the teeth of venomous serpents could overcome Your children, for Your mercy came to help them and healed them. For it was to remind them of Your oracles that they were stung, and they were quickly delivered, to keep them from falling into deep forgetfulness and becoming sundered (unclear meaning) from your kindness. For it was no plant or plaster that cured them, but Your Word/Logos, Lord, that heals all men. For You have power over life and death, and You lead mortals down to the gates of Hades and bring them up again. A person may kill in his wickedness, but the spirit once it is gone out he cannot bring back, nor can he release the imprisoned soul. But it is impossible to escape Your hand, for ungodly men, refusing to know You, were flogged with the strength of Your arm, pursued by unusual rains and hailstorms and relentless showers, and utterly consumed by fire. For, strangest of all, on the water, which quenches everything, the fire had the greater effect, for the universe is the champion of the upright: for now the flame was quieted, so that it should not burn up the animals sent against the ungodly, but that they, when they saw it, might recognize that they were pursued by the judgment of God; and again it blazed up in the midst of the water, with more than fiery power, to destroy the products of an unrighteous land. Instead of these You gave your people angels' food, and untiringly supplied them with bread from heaven, ready to eat, strong in all enjoyment and suited to every taste; for Your support manifested Your sweetness toward your children, and the bread, ministering to the desire of the one that took it, was changed to suit everyone's liking. But snow and ice endured fire without melting, so that they should know that fire was destroying the crops of their enemies, blazing in the hail, and flashing in the rain; and that the fire, in order that upright men might be fed, had forgotten its power.
For creation, serving You who made it, strains against the unrighteous, to punish them, but relaxes on behalf of those who trust in You, to benefit them. Therefore even then, assuming all forms, it served Your all-sustaining bounty, in response to the desire of those who made supplication, so that Your children, whom You have loved, Lord, might learn that it is not the production of crops that feeds humankind, but that it is Your Word/Logos that preserves those who believe in You. For what the fire could not destroy melted away when it was simply warmed by a fleeting sunbeam, so that it might be known that we must rise before the sun to give You thanks, and appeal to You at the dawning of the light. For the unthankful person's hope will melt like the wintry hoarfrost and run off like useless water.

Regina Jasiewicz, Nurse-Practitioner, South Bend Clinic 46617

I have a six-month appointment for my follow-up from the 2007 skin cancer treatment (Mohs microsurgery on basal cell carcinoma on my face) at the Dermatologist's office; instead of Dr. Holly Harris at that part of South Bend Clinic (website is a dot-com) however, I go to the exam room for a check-over by Nurse-specialist Regina J.

Hope this is swift and uneventful on this 16th day of a hot, stormy July. Should get there by 11:15 and home by 12:30ish if all goes without a hitch. The periodic checks are covered by Medical Insurance as great prevention and maintenance for a cancer-free life. I should be more deliberate in my use of sunscreen for sure!

Wisdom of Solomon, chapter 15

15:1 - 19 (translated by Edgar J. Goodspeed)
But You, our God, are kind and true, You are long-suffering and govern everything/the universe in mercy. For even if we sin, we are Yours and know Your might; but we will not sin, for we know that we are accounted Yours. For to know You is perfect uprightness, and to recognize Your might is the root of immortality. For no artful device of men has led us astray, nor the fruitless labor of scene-painters, a figure smeared with varied colors, the appearance of which leads to desire in fools, and they long for the lifeless form of a dead image. Lovers of evil and deserving of such hopes/objects of hopes are those who make them and those who feel desire for them and those who worship them.
For a potter, molding the soft earth, laboriously shapes each object for our use; why, from the same clay he forms dishes to serve clean purposes, and those of the opposite kind, all alike; but of what use shall be made of either, the potter is the judge. And with misdirected toil he shapes a futile god out of the same clay, and having shortly before sprung from the earth, after a little goes to that from which he was taken, when he is called upon to return the soul that was lent him. But he is concerned, not because he will grow tired, nor because his life is short, but he competes with gold- and silversmiths, and copies those who mold brass, and thinks it a glory that he can form counterfeits. His heart is ashes, and his hope cheaper than dirt, and his life more worthless than clay, for he has not recognized the One who formed him, and inspired him with an active soul, and breathed into him the breath of life. But they consider our existence play, and life a lucrative fair, for they say, one must make money any way one can, even by evil. For this man knows better than all others that he sins, producing from earthy material fragile dishes and carved images. But most foolish, and more wretched than a baby's soul, are all those enemies of Your people, who oppress them, for they consider all the idols of the heathen gods, which can neither use eyes to see with, nor noses to inhale the air, nor ears to hear with, nor fingers on their hands to feel with, and their feet are of no use to walk on. For a man made them, and one whose own spirit is borrowed formed them; for no man can form a god like him; for mortal as he is, what he makes with his lawless hands is dead; for they are better than the things they worship, for of the two, they have life, but the idols never had. Why, they worship even the most hateful animals; for by comparison, they are worse than the other animals in their lack of intelligence; nor are they in their appearance as animals so beautiful as to be desired, but they have escaped both the praise of God and His blessing.

Wisdom of Solomon, chapter 14

14: 1-31 (Translated by Edgar J. Goodspeed)
Again, a man setting out on a voyage, and about to travel over wild waves, calls upon a piece of wood more unsound than the ship that carries him. For it was designed through the desire for gain, and Wisdom was the craftsman that built it. And Your providence, Father, pilots it, for You give a way even in the sea, and a safe path through the waves, showing that You can save from anything, so that even without skill a person may go to sea (i.e. Noah). But it is Your will that the works of Your Wisdom should not be idle; therefore men trust their lives to even the smallest plank, and cross the flood/billows on a raft and get safely over. For in the beginning, when the haughty giants perished, the hope of the world took refuge on a raft (ark of Noah), and steered by Your hand left to the world a generating germ/seed, for blessed is wood/the plank through which uprightness comes, but what/the idol is made with hands is accursed, along with the man who made it, because he shaped it, and what was perishable was called a god. For the ungodly man and his ungodliness are equally hateful to God. For what is done must be punished with the man who did it. Therefore there will be an examination of the idols of the heathen, for, although a part of God's creation, they became an abomination, and snares to the souls of men, and a trap for the feet of the foolish. For the devising of idols is the beginning of fornication, and the invention of them is the corruption of life. for they did not exist from the beginning, and they will not last forever; for through the vanity/empty illusions of men they came into the world, and therefore a speedy end for them was designed. For a father afflicted with untimely grief made a likeness of his child, that had been quickly taken from him, and presently honored as a god him who was once a dead man, and handed down to his subjects mysteries and rites. Then the ungodly practice, strengthened by time, came to be observed as law. And by the orders of monarchs carved images were worshiped. And when men could not honor them in their presence, because they lived far away, they imagined how they looked , far away, and made a visible/palpable image of the king they honored, so as by their zeal to flatter the absent one as though he were present. But the ambition of the artist stimulated even those who did not know the subject to intensified worship; for he, perhaps wishing to gratify someone in authority, elaborated the likeness by his art into greater beauty; and the multitude, attracted by the charm of his workmanship, now regarded as an object of worship (Greek: Sebasma) the one whom they had recently honored as a man. And this proved an ambush for man's life, because men in bondage to misfortune or royal authority clothed sticks and stones with the Name that cannot be shared with others. And then it was not enough for them to go astray about the knowledge of God, but though living in a great war of ignorance, they calls such evils peace. For neither while they murder children in their rites nor celebrate secret mysteries, nor hold frenzied revels with alien laws do they keep their lives or marriages pure, but one man waylays another and kills him, or grieves him by adultery. And it is all confusion of blood and murder, theft and fraud, depravity, faithlessness, discord, perjury, clamor at the good, forgetfulness of favors, defilement of souls, confusion of sex (roles), irregularity in marriage, adultery, and indecency/debauchery. For the worship of the unspeakable idols is the beginning and cause and end of every evil. For they/the worshipers either rejoice in madness, or prophesy falsely, or live unrighteously, or readily forswear themselves. For since they believe in lifeless idols, they do not expect to be harmed for swearing wickedly. But justice will overtake them for both matters, because they thought wickedly of God and gave heed to idols, and because they swore unrighteously to deceive, in disregard of holiness. For it is not in the power of the gods men swear by, but the penalty of those who sin that always pursues the transgression of the unrighteous.

Wisdom of Solomon, chapter 13

13: 1-19 (translation of Edgar J. Goodspeed)
For all are foolish by nature, and had no perception of God, and from the good things that were visible they had not the power to know Him who is, nor through paying attention to His works did they recognize the workman, but either fire, or wind, or swift air, or the circle of the stars, or rushing water, or the heavenly luminaries, the rulers of the world, they considered gods. And if through delight in their beauty they supposed that these were gods, let them know how far superior is the Lord of these. For the originator of beauty created them; but if it was through awe at their power and operation, let them conclude from them how much mightier He who formed them is. For from the greatness and beauty of what is created, the originator of them is correspondingly perceived. But yet little blame attaches to these men, for perhaps they just go astray in their search for God and their desire to find Him; for living among His works they search and believe the testimony of their sight, that what they see is beautiful. But again, even they are not to be excused; for if they had power to know so much that they could try to make out the world, why did they not sooner find the Lord of all this? For they are miserable, and their hopes are set on the dead, who have called the works of men's hands gods, gold and silver, the subject of art, and likenesses of animals, or useless stone, worked by some ancient hand. But if some carpenter saws down a tree he can handle, and skilfully strips off all its bark, and shaping it nicely makes a dish suited to the uses of life, and burns the chips of his work to prepare his food, and eats his fill; but the worst of them, which is good for nothing, a crooked piece, full of knots, he takes and carves to occupy his spare time, and shapes it with understanding skill, he makes it a copy of a human form, or makes it like some common animal, smearing it with vermilion, and painting its surface red, and coating every blemish in it; and making an abode for it worthy of it, he fixes it on the wall, and fastens it with iron. So he plans for it, so that it will not fall down, for he knows that it cannot help itself; for it is only an image and needs help. But he prays to it about his property and his marriage and his children, and is not ashamed to speak to a lifeless thing, and appeals to something that is weak, for health, and asks something that is dead, for life, and supplicates what is itself utterly inexperienced, for aid, and something that cannot even take a step, about a journey, and he asks strength for gain and business and success in what he undertakes from something whose hands are most feeble.

more on the July 10-11 Relay for Life (Niles-Buchanan, Michigan event at local High School track)

from a Niles Daily Star reporter's online posted story (Sunday late afternoon):

The 13th annual Relay began with a noontime opening ceremony and survivors' lap. People (were) walking the track for 20 hours until 8 a.m. Sunday. (It was a) picture-perfect day, featuring hundreds of walkers - many of them cancer survivors, wearing purple shirts. Dozens of tents lined the circular track, many of them offering games, face painting, food, beverages, even haircuts to raise money for the cause. A DJ (playing taped music) was on hand as children played in the inflatable bouncing castle (along with) games, sports, silent auctions, arts & crafts sales, barbecues.
Chairperson Dawn Lamson expected the total came to $140,000: we were number one in 2007; it really brings the community together; it's a learning experience; you can learn about cancer and how to fight against it!

Where did Wisdom of Solomon "fit"?

For St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo, North Africa, it is mentioned half-way in during a discussion of "the complete canon of scripture" (On Christian Teaching, translated by R.P.H. Green for the Oxford World Classics edition, pages 36-7):

The five books of Moses (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy) and the single books of Joshua son of Nave and of Judges, and the little book known as Ruth. . .all this is historiography. . .There are others, forming another sequence, not connected with this class or each other, like Job, Tobias/Tobit, Esther, Judith, and the two books of Maccabees and the two of Ezra (Ezra & Nehemiah), which seem to follow on from the chronologically ordered account which ends with Kings and Chronicles. Then comes the prophets, including David's single book of Psalms, and three books of Solomon, namely Proverbs, Song of Songs, and Ecclesiastes. The two books entitled Wisdom and Ecclesiasticus (a.k.a. Sirach) are also said to be by Solomon, on the strength of a general similarity. . .These are all the books in which those who fear God and are made docile by their holiness seek God's will. The first rule is to know these books; not necessarily to understand them but to read them so as to commit them to memory or at least make them not totally unfamiliar. Then the matters which are clearly stated in them, whether ethical precepts or articles of belief, should be examined carefully and intelligently. The greater a person's intellectual capacity, the more of these he/she finds. In clearly expressed expressed passages of scripture one can find all the things that concern faith and the moral life (namely hope and love)

from De Doctrina Christiana (Latin title of this work from a great Christian thinker at his prime in the 390's and 400's C.E.) Book two, VIII, 13

Wisdom of Solomon, chapter 12

from prior chapter that concluded chapter 11: 1 - 12:1
12:2 - 27 (Edgar J. Goodspeed translation)
Therefore You correct little by little those who go astray, and you admonish them by reminding them of the things through which they sin; so that they may escape from their wickedness and believe in you, Lord. For those who long ago inhabited Your holy land You hated for acting most hatefully, practicing enchantments and unholy rites, merciless killing of children, and cannibal feasting on human flesh and blood. Initiates from the midst of a pagan brotherhood, and parents who were murderers of helpless lives, You determined to destroy by the hands of our forefathers, so that the land which you prized above all others might receive a worthy colony of God's children. But even these, as being men, You spared, and You sent wasps as forerunners of Your host, to destroy them little by little. Not that You were unable to make the upright defeat the ungodly in battle, or to destroy them at one blow with terrible wild animals or a stern command, but in judging them little by little You gave them opportunity to repent, for You were not ignorant that their origin was evil, and their wickedness inborn, and that their manner of thought would never change. For they were a race accursed from the beginning, and it was not through fear of any man that you left them unpunished for their sins. For who can say, "What have you done?" Or who can oppose Your judgment? And who can accuse You of the destruction of the nations which You made? Or who will come to stand before You as the avenger of unrighteous men? For neither is there any god but You, who care for all men, to show that You do not judge righteously, Nor will any king or monarch be able to face You about those whom You have punished. But since You are upright, You conduct all things uprightly, considering it inconsistent with Your power to condemn the man who does not deserve to be punished. For Your strength is the beginning of uprightness and the fact that You are Lord of all makes You spare all. For when men disbelieve in the perfection of Your power, You display Your strength, and in the case of those that know, You rebuke their rashness and govern us with great forbearance. For the power is at your command, whenever You wish it. By such deeds You taught Your people that the upright man must be humane, and You made Your sons be of good hope, because You give repentance for sins, for if You punished with such care and indulgence those who were the enemies of Your servants, and deserved death, giving them time and opportunity to escape from their wickedness, with what exactness You have judged Your sons, to whose forefathers You gave oaths and agreements promising them good! So when You discipline us, You flog our enemies ten thousand fold, so that when we judge we may reflect on Your goodness, and when we are judged we may look for mercy. Therefore you tormented through their own abominable practices those who lived wickedly, in a life of folly, for they went astray far beyond the ways of error, accepting as gods the lowest and basest of animals, being deceived like foolish babies. Therefore You sent Your judgment in mockery of them, as though to unreasoning children. But those who cannot be admonished by mockeries of correction, will experience a judgment worthy of God. For because through what they suffered they became indignant at those whom they considered gods, being punished by means of them, they saw and recognized as the true God Him whom they had before refused to know. Therefore the very height of condemnation overtook them.

Wisdom of Solomon, chapter 11

11:1 - 12:1 (Edgar J. Goodspeed translation)
She (Wisdom) made their doings prosper by means of a holy prophet (Moses). They traveled through an uninhabited desert, and pitched their tents in trackless places. They withstood their enemies and repulsed their foes. They grew thirsty and called upon You, and water was given them out of a rocky cliff, and a cure for their thirst out of the hard stone. For the means by which their enemies were punished benefited them in their time of need. Instead of the fountain of an ever flowing river, stirred up with filthy blood, as a rebuke for the decree to kill the babes, You gave them plenty of water, in a way unlooked for, showing through their thirst at that time how you punished their adversaries. For when they were tried, although they were only disciplined in mercy, they learned how the ungodly were tormented, when they were judged in wrath. For these You test like a father/parent, warning them, but the ungodly You examined like a stern king, condemning them. Whether absent or present, they were harassed alike; for a double grief seized them, and groaning over the memory of the past. For when they heard that through their punishments the righteous were benefited, they felt it was the Lord('s doing). For the man who had long before been cast forth and exposed, and whom they had rejected with scorn, as events resulted, they admired, when they felt thrist in a different way from the upright. But for the foolish fancies of their unrighteousness, misled by which they worshiped unreasoning reptiles and worthless vermin, you sent a multitude of unreasoning creatures upon them to punish them, so that they should know that a man is punished by the things through which he sins. For Your all-powerful hand, which created the world out of formless matter, did not lack means to send upon them a multitude of bears or bold lions or newly created wild animals, unknown before, and full of rage, either puffing out a fiery breath, or scattering a roar of smoke, or flashing dreadful spakes from their eyes, which could not only have destroyed the people utterly by the harm they did, but have made them die of fright at the very sight of them. Why, without these, the people might have been felled by a single breath, being pursued by justice, and scattered by the breath of Your power. But You ordered everything by measure and number and weight. For it is always Yours to have great strength, and who can withstand the might of your arm? For in Your sight the whole world is like what turns the scale in a balance, and like drop of dew that comes down on the earth in the morning. But You have mercy on all men, because You can do all things, and You overlook men's sins to lead them to repent, for You love all things that exist, and abhor none of the things that you have made; for You would never have formed anything if you hated it. And how could anything have endured, if You have not willed it, or what had not been called forth by You have been preserved? But You spare all, because they are Yours, Lord, Lover of life, (chapter 12, verse 1 follows) for Your imperishable spirit is in all things.

Wisdom of Solomon, chapter 10

10:1 - 21 (Edgar J. Goodspeed translation) part of the historical illustrations
It was She (Wisdom) that protected the first-formed father of the world, in his loneliness, after his creation, and rescued him from his transgression, and gave him strength to master all things. And when an unrighteous man abandoned her in his anger, he (Cain) perished in his fratricidal rage. When the earth was deluged because of him, Wisdom again saved the upright man (Noah), steering him with a cheap piece of wood. It was She that when the nations were confused, in their wicked conspiracy, recognized the upright man (Abraham), and preserved him blameless before God, and kept him steadfast against having pity on his child. When the ungodly were perishing, Wisdom saved an upright man (Lot), who fled from the fire that descended on the Pentapolis (Five Towns); to their wickedness a smoking waste still bears lasting witness, as do trees that bear fruit that never ripens, and a pillar of salt that stands as a memorial of an unbelieving soul. For because they passed Wisdom by, they were not only made incapable of recognizing what was good, but also left behind them to life a memorial of their folly, so that their faults could not pass unnoticed. But Wisdom delivered those who served Her from their troubles. An upright man (Jacob/Israel), who was fugitive from a brother's wrath, she guided in straight paths; she showed him God's kingdom, and gave him knowledge of holy things; she made him prosper in his toils and increased the fruit of his labors; when those who oppressed him were covetous, she stood by him, and made him rich. She protected him from his enemies, and kept him safe from those who lay in wait for him, and decided his hard contest in his favor, so that he should know that godliness is stronger than anything. When an upright man was sold (Joseph), she did not abandon him, but delivered him from sin; she went down into the pit with him, and she did not leave him in prison, until she brought him the scepter of a kingdom, and power over those who lorded it over him; She showed that they were false who had blamed him, and she gave him everlasting honor.
She delivered from a nation of oppressors a holy people and a blameless race; she entered the soul of a servant (Moses) of the Lord, and withstood awe-inspiring kings with portents and signs; she paid to holy men a reward for their toils, she guided them along a wonderful way, and became a shelter for them in the daytime, and a flame of stars at night. She brought them over the Red Sea, and led them through deep waters. But their enemies she overwhelmed, and cast them up from the bottom of the deep. Therefore the upright despoiled the ungodly, and they sang, Lord, of your holy name, and praised with one accord your defending hand. For Wisdom opens the mouth of the dumb, and makes the tongues of babes speak plainly.

Wisdom of Solomon, chapter 9

9:1-18 (translated by Edgar Goodspeed) retelling of Solomon's prayer in I Kings 3:6-9 and II Chronicles 8:1-10
"God of my forefathers and merciful Lord, who created all things by your word, and by your wisdom formed man to rule over the creatures you had made, and manage the world in holiness and uprightness and pass judgment in rectitude of soul, Give me the wisdom that sits by your throne, and do not reject me as unfit to be one of your servants. For I am your slave (doulos) and the son of your maidservant, a man weak and short-lived, and inferior in my understanding of judgment; for even if one among the sons of men is perfect, if the wisdom that comes from you is lacking, he will count for nothing.
You have chosen me to be king of your people, and to be judge of your sons and daughters; You told me to build a sanctuary on your holy mountain, and an altar in the city where you dwell, a copy of the holy tent which you prepared in the beginning; and with you is Wisdom, which knows your works, and was present when you made the world, and understands what is pleasing in your sight, and what is in accord with your commands. Send Her forth from the holy heavens and dispatch Her from your glorious throne, to be with me and toil, and so that I may know what is pleasing to you. For she knows and understands all things, and she will guide me with good sense in my actions, and will guard me with her splendor. Then my doings will be acceptable, and I will judge your people uprightly, and be worthy of the throne/s of my father.
For what man can know the counsel of God, or who can decide what the Lord wills? For the calculations of mortals are timid, and our designs are likely to fail, for a perishable body weighs down the soul, and its earthy tent burdens the thoughtful/anxious mind. We can hardly guess at things upon the earth, and we have hard work finding the things that are just at hand, but who has tracked out the things in heaven? And who has learned your counsel unless you gave him wisdom, and sent your holy spirit from on high? So the paths of those who were on the earth were straightened, and men were taught the things that please you, and were saved by Wisdom"

Seven for seven expected student participation

Despite one student notifying me of his College Team's participation at Ann Arbor, Michigan, I was glad to administer the 100-question Midterm to the seven Community College students for the English Composition I course (Spring Term). They can be proud of their accomplishments in the first half coverage of what normally takes about 7 1/2 to 8 weeks in our first 9 or so twice a week meetings (6 - 8:15 p.m.). Those seven are hard workers and will all do well if they keep writing and improving.

The high score was 480 or so out of 500 and even the lesser scores are still in the 430 - 445 range/500 perfect points.

It was also informative to learn today from Mrs. Hughes (Chemistry teacher at Ber. Springs HS) who I saw at the Niles Goodwill store that there are new teachers replacing Mrs. Carol Williams (Junior Writing) and Mrs. Penny Shaffer (Library - Media center - Student Council). The new folks will all have new ideas and plans for a challenging 2010-11.

Wisdom of Solomon, chapter 8

8:1 (meaning follows from previous chapter): For She (Wisdom) reaches from one end of the earth to the other, and conducts everything well.

8:2-21 (Goodspeed translation): I (Solomon) loved and sought after her from my youth up, and I undertook to make her my bride, and I fell in love with her beauty. She glorifies her high birth in living with God, for the Lord of all loves her. For she is initiated into the knowledge of God/intimacy with God, and is a searcher of his works. But if the possession of wealth is to be desired in life, what is richer than wisdom, which operates everything? And if understanding works, who in all the world is a greater craftsman than she? And if a man loves uprightness, her labors are virtues; for she teaches self-control and understanding, uprightness and courage; nothing in life is more useful to men than these. But if a man longs for much experience, she knows antiquity and can forecast the future, she understands the tricks of language and the solving of riddles; she knows the meaning of signs and portents/wonders, and the outcomes of seasons and periods. So I decided to bring her to live with me, knowing that she would give me good counsel, and encouragement in cares and grief. Because of her I will have glory among the multitude, and honor with the elders, though I am young. I will be found keen in judgment, and I will be admired in the presence of monarchs. When I am silent, they will wait for me to speak, and when I speak, they will pay attention, and if I talk at some length, they will put their hands over their mouths. Because of her, I will have immortality, and leave an everlasting memory to those who come after me. I will govern peoples, and nations will be subject to me. Dread sovereigns will be frightened when they hear of me; among the people I will appear good and in war brave. When I enter my house, I will find rest with her, for intercourse with her has no bitterness, and living with her no grief, but gladness and joy.
When I considered these things with myself, and reflected in my mind that in kinship with wisdom there is immortality, and in her friendship there is pure delight, and unfailing wealth in the labors of her hands, and understanding in the experience of her company, and glory in sharing in her words, I went about seeking how to win her for myself. I was a well-formed child, and a good/noble soul fell to me, or rather, I was good and entered an undefiled body. But I perceived that I could not win her unless God gave her to me (And this too came of understanding, to know from whom the favor came).
