First in a series of three conversations

In a famous presidential primary debate in 2008, libertarian candidate Ron Paul argued that the United States was attacked on September 11 because of its military meddling in Middle Eastern affairs. Former mayor Rudy Giuliani called that one of the most absurd explanations he had ever heard, and demanded an immediate apology. But the question remains.

Was September 11 an expression of religious fanaticism or blowback to US foreign policy? Is this an either/or question or a both/and proposition? Answers to these critical questions have varied in the scholarly conversation and the public arena.

FEMA Funeral Cost Assistance (after COVID-19 pandemic) -- status August 2021 : $888 million

CNN) -- George Harrington applied for the Federal Emergency Management Agency's funeral assistance program soon after it launched in mid-April. He sent in all the documents related to the burial of his father, George III, 80, a veteran and registered nurse who had died from Covid-19 in a nursing home a year earlier.

And then he waited. And waited. And waited.

Harrington, who paid more than $11,000 for his father's funeral, called FEMA every week but the staffers couldn't tell him when he might receive the funds. The Danvers, Massachusetts, resident reached out to elected officials too as he grew increasingly frustrated.

Finally, in June, he received the reimbursement of $9,000, the maximum FEMA provides for each loved one who died of Covid-19. He's now more understanding of the time it took to process his application.

"It let me pay off bills, let me get back on my feet," said Harrington, a community manager for an affordable housing division of a real estate developer. "I got my money. I didn't have to wait a year. So I'm happy."

Harrington is among the more than 135,000 people who've been helped so far by the funeral assistance program, which Congress established as part of its coronavirus relief legislation. The effort got off to a rocky start, but the agency has approved about 55% of the nearly 247,500 applications it's received and has doled out more than $888 million, as of August 2.

Minnesota residents have had the highest percentage of their applications approved, at 64%, followed by Oklahoma residents at 63%. Applicants in Alaska, the District of Columbia and Montana each had among the lowest shares, with about 44% of their claims approved, along with Puerto Rico at 43%.

Patristic Homilies on the Transfiguration (SVS Press, 2021) -- translated by Brian E. Daley, S.J. SVS Press

 now available August 2021

https://svspress.com/light-on-the-mountain-greek-patristic-and-byzantine-homilies-on-the-transfiguration-of-the-lord/?mc_cid=6670abfce9&mc_eid=3c4ca5f452

The episode of the Transfiguration of Jesus plays a key role in the narrative of the Synoptic Gospels. Peter and his fellow Apostles have just acknowledged Jesus to be Israel’s long-awaited Messiah, and have been shocked by Jesus’ immediate prediction of his coming passion and death. Now Peter, James and John are allowed to share an extraordinary vision, marking him out as truly God’s own Son, radiant with divine glory.

This volume brings together, in a new translation, a comprehensive collection of homilies on the Transfiguration of Christ from the Greek Patristic and Medieval Church, from Origen in the third century to St. Gregory Palamas in the fourteenth. Together they form a profound and moving set of meditations, from many perspectives and in many voices, on “the light of the recognition of the glory of God in the face of Christ” (II Cor 4.6), and on its importance for our lives.

Early Christian commentators and preachers recognized the crucial importance of this incident for Christian faith and discipleship, as pointing in advance to the power of the Cross and Resurrection of Christ. The liturgical feast of the Transfiguration, anticipating that of the Exaltation of the Cross by forty days, came to be celebrated in the Eastern and Western Churches, beginning in the seventh century; yet since at least the third century, theologians have reflected on the significance of this event for the life of faith.

Poetry Foundation on Dante Aligheri (important work)

 PoetryFoundation dot-org/

His most famous work, The Divine Comedy, is as rich in science, astronomy, and philosophy, and as it is rooted in 14th-century Catholicism and Italian politics. The epic describes Dante’s imagined journey through Hell and Purgatory to Heaven. Inferno, the most popular and widely studied section of The Divine Comedy, recounts Dante’s travels through the different regions of Hell, led by his mentor and protector, the Roman poet Virgil. In his translation of Inferno, Mark Musa writes, “Dante invites us to read his poem as he expects us to read the Bible, that is, to believe in the historical truth of the literal level. And this extends to the figural symbolism of the main characters in the allegory of the poem. We are not dealing with consistent or typical allegory ... his is much more sophisticated.” Constructed as a huge funnel with nine descending circular ledges, Dante’s Hell features a vast, meticulously organized torture chamber in which sinners, carefully classified according to the nature of their sins, suffer hideous punishment, often depicted with ghoulish attention to detail. Sinners who recognize and repudiate their sins are given the opportunity to attain Paradise through the arduous process of purification, which continues in Purgatorio. A shift from human reason to divine revelation takes place in Purgatory, a place where penitents awaiting the final journey to Paradise continually reaffirm their faith and atone for the sins they committed on earth. A mood of brotherly love, modesty, and longing for God prevails in Purgatory. Although in Hell, Virgil—a symbol of human reason—helps Dante understand sin, in Purgatory the poet needs a more powerful guide who represents faith: Beatrice. Finally, Paradiso manifests the process of spiritual regeneration and purification required to meet God, who rewards the poet with perfect knowledge.

Near the end of his life, Dante settled in Ravenna, Italy under the patronage of Guido da Polenta, where he died September 13 or 14, 1321. Although The Divine Comedy caused an immediate sensation during his life, Dante’s fame waned during the Italian Renaissance and was later revived in the 19th and 20th centuries. Many scholars have examined the structural unity of the poem, discussing the relationship between medieval symbolism and allegory within the poem’s three sections and exploring Dante’s narrative strategy. Others have marveled at the seemingly inexhaustible formal and semantic richness of Dante’s text. With its various enigmatic layers of philological and philosophical complexities, The Divine Comedy has received scrutiny by critics, literary theorists, linguists, and philosophers, who have cherished the immortal work precisely because it translates the harsh truth about the human condition into a poetics of timeless beauty.

Michigan statewide difference as far as past month's COVID-19 trends

from Detroit (MI) Free Press article online

Michigan is looking far rosier than the rest of the country — at least for now.

It's one of the last holdouts in terms of seven-day coronavirus case counts per 100,000 people and community transmission, according to federal data. But there are indicators that may change.

Only Michigan, South Dakota, Vermont and four U.S. territories, including Guam, had the lowest seven-day case rates per 100,000 people, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention COVID-19 tracker Friday. Michigan's positivity rate was 3% to 4.9%.

Michigan was one of six states, as well as Guam, listed with moderate community transmission level as of Friday. It was the only state in the Midwest with that designation. All of its nearby neighbors — Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin — had substantial community transmission, according to the CDC tracker.

Status of Indiana as considered by Republican Gov. Holcomb (during pandemeic) for Aug. 1 - 31

 from WPTA    dot-com

July 29 posted article:

INDIANAPOLIS (WPTA21) - Gov. Eric Holcomb has extended the public emergency in Indiana for another month, with that measure now in effect through August.

His signature on Thursday enacts an Executive Order that continues directives that pertain to health care workers and facilities, certain state agencies and law enforcement.

No limits were placed on public gatherings and no mask mandates are in the new order, which reiterates the importance of vaccination, noting that "unvaccinated individuals are the most at risk for serious illness, hospitalization and death."

The public health emergency was declared in March 2020.

Since January, 98 percent of new COVID-19 cases involve unvaccinated individuals, he said.

As of Thursday, about 48 percent of all Hoosiers have received at least one dose of a vaccine, with 45 percent fully vaccinated.
