Speaker on "Climate, Catastrophe, and Faith": how changes in climate drive religious upheaval

Philip Jenkins (Historian at Baylor Univ., Waco, TX)

will present the annual sponsored seminar/lecture

Respondents from Oxford, U.K. and IUPUI (Indianapolis,

IN) will share in a  panel discussion.

Philip Jenkins - thesis - CLIMATE, CATASTROPHE, & FAITH (OUP book 2021)

 from page 3

"Throughout history,

climate and climate change have been key drivers of

religious development -- not, of course, every innovation

or movement, but many of them, and in remarkable diversity.

Within Christianity, the warmth and prosperity

of the High Middle Ages shaped the forms

of Catholic faith and doctrine that

emerged in that era

and which served as a foundation for later times. . .

Any historical account that ignores or

underplays climate (change / factors)

dimension is lacking.

Rosh Hashana 5783/2022 Gregorian

Happy New Year to the Jewish people and to those observing

the beginning of the annual High Holy Days!

The New Year begins for this year 5783/2022 on Sunday sundown Sept. 25

and ends Tuesday sunrise.  It is a time to mark anticipation and thanksgiving

but also to remember difficult and even tragic developments like the

attack of Russia against the sovereign Ukrainian nation on 24 Feb. this past year

EDITORIAL in J Post (Jerusalem Post)

This past year has been a difficult one for the Jewish people and for Israel

Although we appear to be emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic,

there have been some disturbing developments:

from Russia's invasion of Ukraine seven months ago to the

Vienna negotiations on a new Iran nuclear deal.

People of the Post (Ft. St. Joseph) - Archaeological Project WMU Series booklet #4 - Sept. 2022

from Page 64 summation of the coverage of Historical Archaeology finds at the

Colonial-era site / military location for several national armies ("Four Flags")

Historical documents and archaeological remains indicate

that Fort St. Joseph was occupied by groups of people who

had different aspirations and social identies, even as they

increased and shared a way of life.

Cooperation was essential for the people of the post.

They relied on and complemented each other's talents

as they maintained some degree of autonomy in the

struggle to carve out an existence on the frontier of

"New France" (mid-North American region in 1600-1700s).

Native peoples often welcomed the newcomers and

sought to fit them into their culture and worldview.

Native Americans extended food, technology, local

knowledge, and kinship ties to the French, as they

attempted to integrate them into their daily lives,

albeit on their own terms

The French (then holding the Fort St. Joseph),

in turn, offered imported goods, religion, . . .civilized

life. . .

All segments -- Native American + French, men + women,

soldiers + priests -- mobilized material objects to express,

transform, and negotiate social identities in the 18th Century

(Timeline on page 6 of PEOPLE OF THE POST lists

1716 as date when French trade was established in the region;

1779 as date when British occupy the fort, during Rev. War era)

Queen Elizabeth II on her Christian belief and ethic (excerpt from Xmas message 2016)

"Jesus Christ lived obscurely for most of his life

and never traveled far.

He was maligned and rejected by many,

AND yet, billions of people now follow his teaching

and find in him the guiding light for their lives.

Homily on Genealogy of Lord Jesus Christ (Luke 3 and Matthew 1)

from Joseph T. Lienhard, S.J. translation and annotating for #FathersoftheChurch series (vol. 64)

ORIGEN: Homilies on Luke (CUA, 1996) page 115 Homily 28, paragraph 1

"Our Lord and Savior was greater than Melchizedek,

whose genealogy Scripture does not trace.

Now the Lord is described as being born according to the order of his ancestors.

Although his divinity has no human origin,

for your sake he willed to be born since you have your origin in flesh.

But the evangelists (Gospel writers: Matthew & Luke) do not give the same account of his genealogy.

This fact has #disquieted some people very much.

Matthew begins to construct his genealogy from Abraham,

and reaches the point at which he says, "BUT THE BIRTH OF JESUS CHRIST WAS THUS" (1:18)

and describes him not at the time of his baptism

but at the time at which he came into the world.

Luke, in contrast, when he explains his genealogy, does not proceed from the earlier to the later;

instead, after he had already said that Jesus was baptized, he traces

his ancestry all the way back to GOD himself!
