Steve’s Run guest speaker Danny Sledge, who retired from a higher education career that included Kalamazoo College dean of students, knows it’s rare for a man to experience breast cancer.
“It’s rare unless it’s you,” Sledge said of the 2,600 men it strikes, or 1.3 in 100,000. “Then it’s real.”
Sledge will share his story at the 44th running of Steve’s Run on Saturday, July 28, 2018 on Southwestern Michigan College’s Dowagiac campus (Rural Community College's campus) to benefit cancer research and the Steven Briegel Scholarship Fund.
The 10K run, 5K run/walk and fun run start at 8:30 a.m. in front of the David C. Briegel Building, named for Steve’s father, SMC’s fifth president from 1981-1998. SMC and Fifth Third Bank are the premier sponsors. Steve, who died March 1, 1990, at 22 after a 5 ½-year battle, graduated fifth in the Dowagiac Union High School Class of 1986, from SMC in 1988 and was a junior in Ferris State’s SMC program. Christmas in June - June 20 - 21, 2018

http://uwsm.org/

Every year, across Southwest Michigan, food pantries see themselves fully stocked in the winter months and holiday season. However, when summer hits, food donations go down and their shelves are harder to keep stocked. This can leave low-income, hard working families with very few options. We are asking local businesses to help us stock the local food pantries with items (IN GROUPS OF 100) to help them through the summer months.  We will be collecting all the items on June 20 and June 21 and we will have drop-off locations at:
Upton Middle School, 800 Maiden Ln. St. Joseph, MI 49085
Buchanan Middle School Cafeteria, 610 W 4th St. Buchanan, MI 49107
Brookside Learning Center, 61662 Dailey Rd, Cassopolis, MI 49031
Our participation in this global Day of Action will bring some much needed cheer to local families, and those in our community who serve them.

Four Niles Food Pantries are among those to be helped =

"Water"

Poem from "The Complete Poems of Philip Larkin" (page 56: originally in THE WHITSUN WEDDINGS)

If I were called in
To construct a religion
I would make use of water

Going to church
Would entail a fording
To dry, different clothing

My liturgy would employ
Images of sousing,
A furious devout drench,

And I should raise in the east
A glass of water
Where any-angled light
Would congregate endlessly.

June 6 Fast for Ramadan supper (Iftar) to be held at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. D.C. - breaking POTUS 45 2017 practice

Maggie Haberman article in NY Times (June 2, 2018) -- www.nytimes.com/
President Trump will host a dinner in the coming week in honor of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, restoring a White House tradition that he had abandoned during his first year in office, a West Wing official said on Saturday (6/2/2018).
The dinner is expected to be held on Wednesday (June 6, 2018). The guest list was not made available.
Mr. Trump has a long history of making inflammatory statements about Muslims. During his campaign, he told an interviewer, “I think Islam hates us.”
He repeatedly insinuated over the years that former President Barack Obama might be a Muslim, and in 2015 he said he would seriously consider closing mosques. Late that year, he issued his call for “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States,” and as president he issued a series of travel bans that mostly targeted Muslim nations.
The dinner, which was reported earlier by Politico, will revive a tradition that Republican and Democratic presidents have carried out for years during Ramadan, when Muslims fast during the daylight hours. A meal called an iftar breaks the fast.
