Fiona the Hippo (Cincinnati Zoo) - one year Birthday Celebration (on Jan. 20, 2018)

from local NBC Affiliate (www.wndu.com/ ):

The Cincinnati Zoo is planning a big bash for Fiona on January 20. Her actual birthday is January 24.

The party will include special treats and a visit by specialists from a children's hospital who helped Fiona survive her premature birth. There will be cake and ice cream for visitors, and her caretakers will hold question-and-answer sessions.

The zoo says Fiona can't be outside in low temperatures, so she is spending winter mostly indoors.

She has grown from 29 pounds at birth to more than 600 pounds already.

FLOTUS reads documents, makes recommendation to improve White House Arboretum

from THE Hill (online home news):

A tree that has been located on the south facade of the White House since the 1800s will reportedly be cut down.
CNN reported that the Jackson Magnolia this week is scheduled to be taken down and removed.
The tree — which is one of three that are located on the west side of the White House — is too damaged to stay where it is.
"The overall architecture and structure of the tree is greatly compromised and the tree is completely dependent on the artificial support," documents obtained by CNN regarding the tree reveal.
"Without the extensive cabling system, the tree would have fallen years ago. Presently, and very concerning, the cabling system is failing on the east trunk, as a cable has pulled through the very thin layer of wood that remains. It is difficult to predict when and how many more will fail."
First lady Melania Trump made the final decision to remove the tree after looking at relevant documents including those from specialists at the United States National Arboretum, a White House official told CNN.
The tree was planted when former President Jackson was in office. His wife died shortly after he was elected. He wanted to honor her by planting a sprout from his wife's favorite magnolia tree from their Tennessee farm when he assumed office.

Old Farmer's Almanac -- what does "Winter Solstice" mean?

11:28 a.m. Eastern Time Zone -- December 21, 2017

What is the Winter Solstice?

The word solstice comes from Latin sol “sun” and sistere “to stand still.” In the Northern Hemisphere, as summer advances to winter, the points on the horizon where the Sun rises and sets advance southward each day; the high point in the Sun’s daily path across the sky, which occurs at local noon, also moves southward each day.

At the winter solstice, the Sun’s path has reached its southernmost position. The next day, the path will advance northward. However, a few days before and after the winter solstice, the change is so slight that the Sun’s path seems to stay the same, or stand still. The Sun is directly overhead at “high-noon” on Winter Solstice at the latitude called the Tropic of Capricorn.

Happy 92nd Birthday to Dick Van Dyke! -- movie and TV entertainer -- graduate of Danville (IL) High School

from IMDb online biographical summary:

Dick Van Dyke was born Richard Wayne Van Dyke in West Plains, Missouri December 13, 1925, to Hazel Victoria (McCord), a stenographer, and Loren Wayne Van Dyke, a salesman. His younger brother is entertainer Jerry Van Dyke. His ancestry includes English, Scottish, German, Swiss-German, and Dutch. Although he'd had small roles beforehand, Van Dyke was launched to stardom in the 1960 musical "Bye-Bye Birdie", for which he won a Tony Award, and, then, later in the movie based on that play, Bye Bye Birdie (1963). He has starred in a number of films throughout the years including Mary Poppins (1964), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968) and Fitzwilly (1967), as well as a number of successful television series which won him no less than four Emmys and three made-for-CBS movies. After separating from his wife, Margie Willett, in the 1970s, Dick later became involved with Michelle Triola. Margie and Dick had four children born during the first ten years of their marriage: Barry Van Dyke; Carrie Beth van Dyke; Christian Van Dyke and Stacy Van Dyke, all of whom are now in their forties and married themselves. He has seven grandchildren, including Shane Van Dyke, Carey Van Dyke, Wes Van Dyke and Taryn Van Dyke (Barry's children) and family members often appear with him on Diagnosis Murder (1993).

Grew up in Danville, Illinois, with brother Jerry Van Dyke and fellow celebrities Gene Hackman and Bobby Short. Was a graduate of Danville High School, where he was in the drama club.
