Lecture on U.S. Foreign Policy (Trump Era) in Latin America: Michael Shifter on Feb. 28

Michael Shifter, President of the Inter-American Dialogue, will give a talk on U.S.-Latin American relations under Donald Trump WHERE: Hesburgh Center C103. University of Notre Dame.

Wednesday, Feb., 28, 2018 4:15 pm -
Free and open to the public.
Reception to follow.
In early February Secretary of State Rex Tillerson embarked on a wide-ranging Latin American trip, visiting Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Colombia, and Jamaica. The tour was the Trump administration’s most significant Latin American foray to date. The reaction was mixed. Some praised his efforts to rally support for sanctions against Venezuela in response to the political and economic crisis there and noted his conciliatory tone as a much-needed contrast to President Trump’s frequently aggressive rhetoric.  Others, however, argued that his trip was of little significance and criticized his patronizing tone in warning against increasing Chinese influence in the region. In either case, it is difficult to deny that Rex Tillerson’s Latin America first real engagement with the region — marked by a surprising revival of the long obsolete and often-criticized Monroe Doctrine — came up against a harsh reality of sharply diminished US influence in the Americas.

    Paczki - February 13, 2018 : description at Blog - weblink

from "Just one bite please" Alejandro Roman
    https://justonebiteplease.com/2018/01/25/paczki-polish-doughnuts/   --

How about a filled Polish doughnut know as a PÄ…czki, pronounced (POHNCH-kee). These little pillows of rich egg dough, scented with dark rum and vanilla, are fried until golden brown and then filled with generous amounts of fruit or custard filling and then finished with a liberal dusting of powder sugar. Indulge your friends and family with these decadent sweet treats this coming Fat Tuesday or anytime of the year.
PÄ…czki Day is a time to celebrate: Fat Tuesday (Tuesday, February 13) also known as PÄ…czki Day here in the Detroit-Metro Area is just around the corner. The bakeries in the Polish neighborhood of Hamtramck are starting to gear up and are all ready taking orders for this special day. This is when Detroiters from all backgrounds happily flock to the bakeries in Hamtramck to brave Mother Nature’s winterly winds and snow while waiting in long lines for hours at a time to purchase their own boxes loaded with these decadent little fried pillows of sweet goodness. The tradition comes from Eastern European Polish Roman Catholics. PÄ…czki is a traditional food the week before Lent or the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. For many Polish families PÄ…czki are a treat for Sundays, holidays and other special occasions.
