War Crime by Russian army and its leader V. Putin -- bombing of Mariupol Theatre

March 16, 2022 is the day of infamy when that aggressive act took place.

More than 1,500 civilians were finding shelter and safety in the grand, columned

Donetsk Academic Regional Drama Theater in central Mariupol, Ukraine

when it was struck by Russian forces.  Two 500-kiloton bombs struck close to

each other and were detonated simultaneously.  SOURCE: ABC News

De re Publica (Cicero) -- excerpt translated by Philip Freeman (Princeton U. Press, 2013)

from Freeman's anthology - general work "How to Run a Country" (2013)

The ideal state is one in which the best people desire praise

and honor while avoiding humiliation and disgrace.

Such citizens are not deterred from wrongdoing

by a fear of punishment as laid out in the law

as much as by an inborn sense of shame given

to us by nature itself that makes dread the thought

of justified criticism.  A true leader also encourages

this natural feeling among others by using public

opinion and enhances it through institutions and

education so that shame encourages

good citizenship no less than

fear of legal penalties. . .

Just as a helmsman desires a successful voyage

or a doctor works for the health of a patient

or a general plans for victory,

so the leader of a country should strive

for citizens to lead a happy life

with financial security, abundant resources,

good reputations, and honest virtue.

This is what I (Cicero) yearn for from our

leaders, for it should be their greatest

and most noble goal!

(pages 12 - 13, "How to Run a Country")

Pillar of the Faith -- honored in Coptic Church -- 24th Patriarch of the See of Saint Mark

Church Orthodox defender -- controversies with Arians, Novatianists,

also engaged in lethal combat with Neo-Platonists based at Library of Alexandria

(then led by philosopher Hypatia); he was also antagonistic with Jewish community

at Alexandria, eventually evicting and banishing those with whom he engaged in controversies

He also extremely engaged in debate and opposition to St. John Chrysostom of Antioch and

"Elvis" (2022) feature film - 4 screenplay writers: Luhrman & others

 Rotten Tomatoes online article/review

The biopic is told by an UNRELIABLE NARRATOR,

and that is entirely by design.

Not only does that make Presley's larger-than-life persona leap off the screen,

it makes Col. Tom Parker more of a craven, inhuman monster than any

straightforward biography of the singer likely ever could have accomplished.

Parker is the supervillain of the piece,

the duplicitous and savvy Lex Luthor to Presley's wholesome and talented SUPERMAN.

Federico Finchelstein - renowned historian

From "A Brief History of Fascist Lies" (2020 book on how supporters

of Fascist ideologies regard political lies as truth incarnated

in their leaders).  Historical quotations and propagandistic

appeals from Mussolini, Hitler, Trump, Bolsanaro;

The current fascist-populist talk of "post-truth" has a long political and intellectual

lineage that we cannot ignore.

FROM: Chapter 7 THE FASCIST UNCONSCIOUS

pages 61-3 =

Mussolini conflated the desires of the people (as deduced by himself)

with those of the sacred.  In 1926 he stated that when thinking about the historical

destiny of the nation, he was able to "see" the work of a sacrosanct will, "The

Infallible hand of providence, the infallible sign of divinity" in the unfolding of

events. . .For fascists, instincts, soul, character, and personality were mythical

embodiments, biological realties as well as collective legacies of the imperial past.

[n.b. for Mussolini Italy's past was a divinely-led Roman empire of the Caesars

and furthermore the Holy Roman Empire]

. . .The idea that a subject would find transcendental value "in pain and war" is

a testament to the dehumanizing dimensions of the fascist idea that truth belongs

to the world of the supernatural rather than to human history and agency.

This belief in a sacred form of truth had clear Christian theological connotations.

In NT statements and declarations:

the Lord's truth contrasts with the lies of men (Romans 3:4 NRSV) "Although

everyone is a liar, let God be proved true."

those who do not believe the truth of God are literally demonized (I John 2:22)

"Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist,

the one who denies the Father and the Son."

the lies of the unfaithful emanated from the devil.  They wanted to judge according to

human standards and stood against the truthful understanding that only faith could provide:

"Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot accept my word.  You

are from your father the devil, and you choose to do your father's desires.  He was a

murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth

in him.  When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father

of lies (John 8:43-45)

Fascism's idea of truth grew from this traditional set of oppositions between divine truth

and demonic lies. . .

"Lincoln Monument: Washington" poem by Langston Hughes, 1926

 Let's go see old Abe

Sitting in the marble and the moonlight,

Sitting lonely in the marble and the moonlight,

Quiet for ten thousand centuries, old Abe,

Quiet for a million, million years.

Quiet ---

And yet a voice forever

Against the

Timeless walls

Of time ---

Old Abe.

Mystical Symbolism - visions of Hildegard of Bingen

The visions that I saw I beheld neither in sleep

nor dreaming nor in madness nor with my bodily eyes nor ears

nor in hidden places.

I saw them in full view and according to God's will,

when I was wakeful and alert

with the eyes of the spirit and the inward ears.

And how this was brought about is indeed hard

for human flesh to search out -- Hildegard of Bingen

Pentecost Poem - "On God's Grandeur"

 Poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins

The world is charged with the grandeur of God.

It will flame out, like shining from shook foil;

It gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oil

Crushed.  Why do men now not reck his rod?

Generations have trod, have trod, have trod;

And all is seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil;

And wears man's smudge and shares men's smell: the soil

Is bare now; nor can foot feel, being shod.

And for all this, nature is never spent;

There lives the dearest freshness deep down things;

And though the last lights off the black West went

Oh morning, at the brown brink eastward, springs --

Because the Holy Ghost over the bent

World broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings.

First of June - poem

 Poem by W.S. Merwin

Night when the south wind wakes the owl

and the owl says it is summer

now it is time to be summer

it is time for that departure

though the blanket dates from childhood

it is time whoever you are

to be going they are older

every one of them there is spring

no longer this is the south wind

you have heard about that brings rain

taking away roofs with a breath

and a season of grapes in one

blind unpredictable moment

of hail this is the white wind that

you cannot believe here it is

and the owl sails out to see whose

turn it is tonight to be changed
