Wisdom 10 : 10 - 12
IECOT edition (2019, Kohlhammer, Stuttgart)
a just man flying
from the wrath of his
brother she (WISDOM)
guided on right paths.
She showed him the
majesty of God and
gave him the knowledge
of holy things. She
made him prosper in his
hard labors and made
his toil fruitful. She
stood by him against the
greed of his oppressors
and made him rich.
She guarded him from his
enemies and protected him
from the one who laid
snares for him.
She judged in his favor
in a difficult struggle
so that he might learn that
piety [GREEK: eusebeia]is the most
powerful thing of all!
[an interesting re-reading of Jacob's
struggle with God at the brook Jabbok
Genesis 32:23 - 32]
"Godliness"/Piety is used in
the New Testament at I Timothy 3:16.
______________________________________
We find ourselves at this tenth chapter
of Wisdom with a real reinterpretation
of the history of salvation. Our sage
avoids describing in detail or emphasizing
too much God's direct interventions in
history, as , for example, with the parting
of the waters of the sea. The sage prefers
rather to highlight the mediation of wisdom.
In contrast with the rereading of the Exodus
events in Psalm 78 MT, our sage does NOT
emphasize the people's sin but rather
their justice and so the salvation
obtained by the people right from the story of
Adam. In this way, Israel's past, linked in a
literary way with the first part of Wisdom,
becomes at the same time, an explanation of
the present situation of the people together
with a foundation for the future. . .
Future salvation is founded
on the history of the past.
