Which destruction of the Zion Sanctuary (Psalm 74:20) does the song presuppose? The majority of exegetes are of the opinion that Psalm 74 reflects events of the times of the Maccabees. Three arguments are advanced: (1) the statements of Psalm in their entirety can be harmonized nicely with passages like I Maccabees 2:4; 4:38; II Maccabees 5:16, 21; 8:35; (2) especially the lament about the failure of prophecy (Psalm 74:9) can best be explained in connection with the time of the Maccabees (I Macc. 9:27; 4:46; 14:41); (3) against dating the psalm in the period immediately after 587 B.C.E. is the act that there is no mention of being exiled. . .
