The funeral Mass for Hesburgh will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Basilica on campus. Because of limited seating, the Mass is by invitation only. It is being organized by the Congregation of Holy Cross. Hesburgh, Notre Dame's president from 1952 to 1987, died Thursday at age 97.
At the memorial service (after the burial at the Holy Cross community cemetery), the dignitaries will speak about Hesburgh's life and contributions. The event will include music from student choirs and instrumental groups and reflections from the Carters, Rice, Notre Dame President the Rev. John I. Jenkins, and nine other guests. Area residents who aren't able to get a ticket to the memorial service are invited to go to Compton Family Ice Arena on campus to watch the service live streamed on the arena's large video board. It also will be streamed live online at: hesburgh.nd.edu.
