101 years ago

The official beginning of the

Federal Bureau of Investigation

was 1908, but its true inception was:

1924

when J. Edgar Hoover,

then in his late 20's, was

appointed director.  From the

start, its mission placed it at

the hazardous intersection of

politics and law enforcement:

investigating, prosecuting,

and deporting left-wing

radicals and anarchists after

World War I. . .

Even while presiding over the

Bureau's worst excesses, 

Mr. Hoover ensured that the

agency remained independent

from direct White House
