One hundred and fifty-three fish

 St. Augustine of Hippo

Commentary on Psalm 49 (transl. Maria Boulding)

WSA 21st Century : Works of St. Augustine for the 21st Century

"After his resurrection the

Lord orders his disciples to

cast the net to starboard,

and 153 fish are hauled up,

yet large as they were, the

apostle tells us (Gosp. John

21: 6 - 11) the nets did not

split. . .BY neither saying

cast the nets right NOR left,

he indicated that both good

and bad are to be taken, mixed

up together.  And caught

they were, as the gospel's

reliable account testifies. . .

The catch symbolized the present

age and the torn nets symbolized

the rents and tears made by

heretics and schismatics.  But

the Lord's action after his

resurrection signified what will

happen for us after our own

resurrection, in that multitude

in the heavenly kingdom. . .
