August 9, 1945 : 11:02 U.S. Army drops "Fat Man" Plutonium bomb

The FAT MAN bomb was dropped at

11:02 a.m. local time

at an altitude of 1,650 feet

above the Urakami valley.

Nagasaki, a coastal city, well-known

where

Portuguese traders had made

trade and inter-religious

contact in the

16th Century C.E.  Nagasaki

during the 20th century Asian

was a key port city 100 miles

away from Kokura where

the Japanese military

operated one of their

biggest ordnance factories,

manufacturing among

other things, chemical

weapons.  As a target,

Nagasaki was larger than

Kokura with a population

of 263,000 including two

Mitsubishi military

factories.  A B-29 named "Bock's Car"

dropped the plutonium bomb

only belatedly as clouds

had obscured visibility.

Major Sweeney prepared

to turn back due to diminished

fuel for the return flight.  Its

explosive yield was 21 kilotons,

about 40% more than Little

Man (the uranium Atomic

Bomb dropped on Hiroshima).
