In 1775 (250 years ago)
the Spanish explorer
Juan Miguel de Ayala
sailed into the Bay and
during this expedition
he named one of the 3 islands:
Alcatraces.
Due to anglicization the famous
island continues to be known as
ALCATRAZ.
