John Paul II (Karol Jozef Wojtyla, then-Cardinal of Poland) elected after 8 ballots

This historic and young Cardinal (age 58)

was elected Pope in a Conclave called

in emergency session after Pope John Paul I

was found in the papal apartments, deceased.

His funeral quickly followed and when Conclave

began again, it took 2 days for the 8-ballot voting

in Vatican City in Sept. 1978.

1978 was the Year of Three Popes : Pope Paul VI,

Pope John Paul I, and Pope John Paul (his tenure

lasted until his death after a prolonged illness in 2005).
