August 21, 1831
Nat Turner, self-styled prophet,
preacher, carpenter
who launched a slave rebellion
resulting in the deaths of at least
55 white people (including his
owner, Joseph Travis and family);
scores of black people (enslaved
and free people of color) were killed
in the retribution in the aftermath of
the killing, Turner himself later was
executed by Virginia authorities.
He claimed to have been divinely chosen
to lead the rebellion and during early years,
and as a 3-4 year-old could tell of events
that occurred before his birth. He regularly
read the Bible and preached/encouraged
his fellow enslaved men, women, children.
