Walter Brueggemann
scholar of prophetic imagination
OBITUARY: CT (Christianity Today)
was 92 at his death in Michigan last month.
The author of more than 100 books was
professor emeritus at Columbia Theological
Seminary, Decatur, Georgia until his retirement
in 2003. Though ordained, he never served
a church but was much sought after as a preacher
and lecturer. His 1978 book The Prophetic Imagination
sold more than a million copies and is frequently
used in seminary classes on The Book of the 12
and major prophets (Hebrew Bible). He was
text-focused and resisted dominant modes of
biblical interpretation in favor of bringing
readers to the Text and to the Word of God.
