home Tues. July 22, 2025 at Rochester, NY
OBITUARY. . . He had retired in
2015 and reached the age of 84, having
released 30 pop-jazz instrumental albums.
He was a true pop star with an instantly
recognizably silhouette, bewhiskered, his
long hair crowned by a turned-down fedora.
Nominated 14 times for Grammy Awards,
he won twice in 1976 and 1979.

"Feels So Good" in 1978 became a double-platinum album.
He even started as an animated version of himself on
the FOX series "King of the Hill"; he also won an
Emmy Award for his performance at the closing ceremony
of the Winter Olympics 1980 at Lake Placid, NY.
OBITUARY details : he enrolled in a music school
at age 8. He called Dizzy Gillespie his "musical father."
he is survived by two daughters; his wife died in 2015.
He is quoted, "I've written probably 95% of the music
I've played. I feel like the cord between the plug in the
wall and the tape recorder."
