"The Politics of Ceasefires" featuring Malin Åkebo, Kroc Institute Visiting Research Fellow
What importance do ceasefires play in contemporary intrastate armed conflicts?
Ceasefire agreements are often assumed to create momentum in peace processes and pave the way for a peaceful solution to armed conflicts. However, there is also a risk that such agreements can be counterproductive in the context of intrastate conflicts. Based on research on ceasefire agreements and peace processes in Aceh, Indonesia and Sri Lanka, Malin Åkebo will discuss how ceasefire agreements can both advance and hinder progress in peace processes.
Malin Åkebo holds a Ph.D. in political science from Umeå University in Sweden, where she recently served as a university lecturer in peace and conflict studies. Her research focuses on peace processes, peace agreements, and conflict transformation.
12:30 p.m. in room C104/105, Hesburgh Center for International Studies, KROC Center
