Exhibit marking 700th anniversary of death of Dante: Zahm collection of DIVINA COMMEDIA items, et cetera

 https://events.nd.edu/events/2021/12/06/exhibit-bound-up-with-love-the-extraordinary-legacy-of-father-john-zahms-dante-collection/

starting 12/6/2021 8 a.m. 102 Hesburgh Library, Sp. Collections room

This year marks the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri, and the milestone is being celebrated around the world. In conjunction with this anniversary, our current exhibit showcases the preeminent Dante collection held by the University of Notre Dame.

Rev. John A. Zahm, C.S.C., initiated the collection in 1902 with the purchase of forty-eight important early print volumes of Dante Alighieri's "Divine Comedy." This year we are celebrating the legacy of the Zahm Dante Collection, and the remarkable accumulation of rare material acquired over the past century to enhance the scholarly value of the collection.

Highlights of the exhibition include rare printings of the three crowns of Italian literature — Dante, Petrarch, and Boccaccio — as well as verse anthologies of poetry and other tools such as grammars and dictionaries that would have assisted 16th-century readers of vernacular literature.

This exhibit was curated by Tracy Bergstrom (Curator, Italian Studies and Dante Collection), Chiara Sbordoni (Adjunct Professor in Italian, Rome Global Gateway), and Demetrio Yocum (Senior Research Associate, Center for Italian Studies). This and other exhibits within the library are generously supported by the McBrien Special Collections Endowment.

Advent Reading; Baruch 5:1-9

 from Lectionary. Library. Vanderbilt. EDU

Baruch 5:1-9
5:1 Take off the garment of your sorrow and affliction, O Jerusalem, and put on forever the beauty of the glory from God.

5:2 Put on the robe of the righteousness that comes from God; put on your head the diadem of the glory of the Everlasting;

5:3 for God will show your splendor everywhere under heaven.

5:4 For God will give you evermore the name, "Righteous Peace, Godly Glory."

5:5 Arise, O Jerusalem, stand upon the height; look toward the east, and see your children gathered from west and east at the word of the Holy One, rejoicing that God has remembered them.

5:6 For they went out from you on foot, led away by their enemies; but God will bring them back to you, carried in glory, as on a royal throne.

5:7 For God has ordered that every high mountain and the everlasting hills be made low and the valleys filled up, to make level ground, so that Israel may walk safely in the glory of God.

5:8 The woods and every fragrant tree have shaded Israel at God's command.

5:9 For God will lead Israel with joy, in the light of his glory, with the mercy and righteousness that come from him.

St. Nicholas' Day - Dec. 6 annually

 from Old Farmer's Almanac / / / www.almanac.com

"Leaving shoes out" (chapter in longer article)

The most common way to celebrate St. Nicholas Day is to leave shoes out for St. Nicholas to place small gifts in. Socks are fine, too.

Traditionally, the gifts are simply small candies or coins—little items that bring a lot of joy for children. If you wish to celebrate this tradition, leave shoes or wooden clogs by the door on the evening of December 5.

In the morning, the shoes will be fillled with small delights (candy canes, spare change, foreign coins).

State of Indiana (Gov. Holcomb) extends COVID-19 measures (Dec. 2 - 31)

https://wkvi.com/2021/12/governor-holcomb-extends-public-health-emergency-2/

Governor Eric Holcomb signed Executive Orders this week that officially continues the public health emergency and provisions that address the impact of COVID-19.

Those provisions allow Indiana to be eligible to receive enhanced federal funding for Medicaid programs to help cover the increased costs of 500,000 residents who have enrolled in the programs because of the pandemic.  The state would lose more than $175 million in future funding and about 250,000 Hoosiers would lose partial or full Medicaid coverage if the public health emergency ends before the federal public health emergency.

The order also allows 200,000 eligible households to receive an additional $95 per month in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program that assists more than 600,000 Hoosiers.

Additionally, State Health Commissioner Dr. Kristina Box will continue to serve as the statewide ordering physician for those who choose to be vaccinated, which offers easy access to vaccines through pharmacies, local health departments and other health facilities.

The Executive Orders are set to expire December 31, but they may be extended if deemed necessary to preserve the provisions in place.
