Pastoral Letter regarding Tulsa (OK) race massacre from Bishop Jimmy Dunn of OK United Meth. Conference & Missionary Conference (May 27, 2021)

We recognize racism as sin and affirm the ultimate and temporal worth of all persons. We rejoice in the gifts that particular ethnic histories and cultures bring to our total life." --United Methodist Social Principles, 2016

Greetings in the name of the risen Christ.

100 years ago, a massacre occurred in Tulsa which destroyed one of the most prosperous African-American neighborhoods in America.  The Greenwood District, or Black Wall Street as it was commonly called, was decimated by a white mob not deterred by law enforcement.  Over 300 residents of Greenwood were killed, many buried in unmarked graves, and many more were arrested for committing no crimes.  Thousands were left homeless and a neighborhood was ransacked, leaving behind millions in property damage.  After that, the story of this event was mostly forgotten.

During this time, there were two branches of Methodism in Tulsa – the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Methodist Episcopal Church, South – that would eventually become part of The United Methodist Church.  Other branches of Methodism were active in the community, including the Vernon African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, which is the only edifice to survive the massacre.

Both downtown churches, Boston Avenue and First, were utilized as make-shift hospitals for the injured.  At the same time, church leaders in many of the Methodist-affiliated churches preached sermons blaming the victims of the massacre for inciting it.  After Tigert Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church, South moved to a new location, their former building was sold and the site became the corporate front for the Ku Klux Klan.  It is important that we recognize our own explicit and implicit actions in perpetrating and responding to this horrific event.

As we observe the centennial of the Tulsa Race Massacre, United Methodists across the state of Oklahoma stand with the people of Tulsa as we look forward to a more inclusive future even as we look back at this moment in time.  In the words of John Hope Franklin, “If the house is to be set in order, one cannot begin with the present; (one) must begin with the past.”

For many Oklahomans, this injustice was not a topic studied in school or something known by a majority of our citizens.  Until a few years ago, it was one of the least-known incidents of racial violence in United States history.  As faithful followers of Christ, we must not allow that to be an excuse going forward.  What can you do to observe this tragic event and glean some lessons from it?  Here are some resources:

  • In mid-January, Rev. Dr. Robert Turner, pastor of the Historic Vernon AME Church in Tulsa was the preacher for the meeting of the clergy of the conference.  You can view his sermon here

  • In mid-May, the conference hosted a webinar called “Tulsa: 100 Years Later” featuring two African American church planters in the Tulsa area interviewed by Rev. Bessie Hamilton, the conference’s leader for multi-ethnic initiatives.  You can view that webinar here.  There will be a follow-up webinar on June 23.

  • Review the resources at the conference website curated by our Minority Local Church Concerns Ministry Team as well as resources related to racism.

  • For those who work with youth, share this illustrative resource as a way for young people to understand what happened in Tulsa.  There are also other curriculum resources for children here.

  • The denomination’s Discipleship Ministry unit on preaching and worship offers a daily prayer related to anti-racism.  You can sign up to have those delivered to your email inbox.

Last year, the Council of Bishops launched a campaign to dismantle racism.  They called upon all levels of the church to engage with this effort.  As a part of the campaign, the General Commission on Archives and History put together a church study called “Pride, Shame and Pain: Methodist History with Racism and Efforts to Dismantle It.”  We encourage you to download the materials and schedule times in your settings when you can utilize this resource.

You can find out much more information at the Tulsa Race Massacre Commission’s website, including information on a May 31 televised special commemorating the Massacre as well as other events.

Before the COVID 19 pandemic, the annual conference had intended to hold an in-person gathering in Tulsa, to include worship, education, tours and a time to repent for our role in the massacre, but we were forced to cancel those plans.  In light of that, we invite you to join our conference on Monday in praying the historic prayer of confession that we use when approaching the Lord’s Table:

Merciful God,
we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart.
We have failed to be an obedient church.
We have not done your will,
we have broken your law,
we have rebelled against your love,
we have not loved our neighbors,
and we have not heard the cry of the needy.
Forgive us, we pray.
Free us for joyful obedience,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

This year’s annual conference offering will be used in the Tulsa area as we plant two new multi-ethnic faith communities as well as assist in efforts to commemorate this horrific event.

As we remember the 300 lives lost and a community decimated 100 years ago, let us commit today to ending the complicity of silence about this massacre and all acts of racism.  Let us commit to bringing God’s healing to those who have been damaged by the wrongs of the past and present sin of racism.  And, as Christ has commanded, let us love God with all our hearts, all our souls, and all our minds, and our neighbors as ourselves… all our neighbors.

May God continue to remind us our past while pointing us toward a brighter, more inclusive future.

Chipman was also questioned by Republicans on his support for Congress to ban assault weapons and for universal background checks during the hearing, two actions Biden also supports.

He was asked by Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) about if he thinks that District of Columbia v. Heller was rightly decided, which was the 2008 Supreme Court landmark ruling that the Second Amendment protects the right to possess firearms.

“Senator, I’m a cop, not a lawyer,” Chipman said.

When is this month's Full Moon?

 from Old Farmer's Almanac -- http://almanac.com/

WHEN TO SEE THE FULL MOON IN MAY 2021

May’s full Flower Moon reaches peak illumination at 7:14 A.M. (EDT) on Wednesday, May 26. It will be very close to or below the horizon at this time, so plan to venture outdoors the night before (Tuesday, May 25) or on Wednesday night to get the best view of the bright full Flower Moon! Find a location with unobstructed views of the horizon, if possible. See what time the Moon will be visible in your area with our Moonrise and Moonset Calculator.

DON’T MISS THE “BLOOD MOON” TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE… VISIBLE IN SOME AREAS!

This month’s full Moon coincides with a total lunar eclipse! A lunar eclipse occurs when Earth stands directly between the Moon and the Sun, which results in Earth casting its shadow on the Moon. During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon is fully obscured by Earth’s shadow, giving the Moon a reddish hue. This phenomenon is where the term “blood moon” comes from.

On Thursday, Michigan’s governor announced some major steps forward to reopening the state.

Whitmer says the state will lift all outdoor capacity limits and increase indoor capacity to 50% on June 1.

And on July 1 Michigan’s broad mask mandate and all indoor capacity restrictions will be lifted.

Whitmer says fully vaccinated Michiganders no longer need to wear face masks when indoors or outdoors in most cases, and these decisions are based on recently updated guidance from the CDC.

Vaccinated people will still need to wear face coverings if required by a business or place of work when there.

An updated order from the state’s Department of Health is expected on Monday, Maay 24, 2021

 Edwardsburg, MI Public Schools (K-12)

Friday May 21, 2021

All Edwardsburg Public Schools will switch to virtual learning on Friday, May 21 due to expected high temperatures combined with the continued state mask mandate.

The Public Schools’ Heat Index Preparedness Plan indicates that face-to-face instruction can happen when temperatures do not exceed 85 degrees.

In-person learning will go on as planned on Thursday, as temperatures that day are expected to reach 84 degrees. During Thursday classes, students and adults are allowed to take off their masks temporarily if they are having trouble breathing.

Classes will be virtual on Friday as temperatures are expected to reach above 85 degrees. All after school student activities will resume as scheduled.

The Heat Index Preparedness Plan was created in August 2020 in response to concerns posed by staff and families about high temperatures in the schools combined with the mask mandate. Many of the EPS buildings have areas that are not air conditioned.

U.S. to share COVID-19 vaccines (source: USA Today) - May 17, 2021

The  United States will send at least 80 million doses of coronavirus vaccines to other countries by the end of June 2021, President Joe Biden said Monday May 16.

Twenty million doses are from Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson, Biden said. He previously agreed to share up to 60 million doses of AstraZeneca's vaccine, which has not been authorized for emergency use in the U.S by the Food and Drug Administration.

"We're taking another step to help the world," Biden said. "It's the right thing to do. It's the smart thing to do."

The announcements come as the U.S. and other developed nations face increasing criticism for monopolizing vaccines while the developing world struggles. Demand in the U.S. has stalled in recent weeks, and vaccine "hesitancy" is blamed for a steady decline in jabs.

Biden said Jeff Zients, the White House coronavirus coordinator, will lead the global vaccination effort. The U.S. will work with COVAX, a worldwide initiative aimed at equitable access to coronavirus vaccines.

Eid Celebration at Biden-Harris White House (Sunday May 16, 2021)

from Politico dot-com (May 16 article)

The Council on American-Islamic Relations on Saturday said it will boycott the traditional White House Eid celebration in protest at the Biden administration’s actions amid escalating violence between Israeli and Palestinian forces.

American Muslims for Palestine is also boycotting the White House’s virtual Eid celebration, which is scheduled to take place Sunday. CAIR had previously boycotted multiple traditional White House events under the Trump administration.

In a statement released by the White House on Friday (May 14, 2021), Biden said: “Jill and I are looking forward to the White House’s commemoration of Eid this Sunday. We were heartened to see Eid celebrations around the world, but we know that this year, the situation in the Holy Land is weighing heavily on Muslims everywhere, including our Muslim communities here in the United States.“

“Palestinians—including in Gaza—and Israelis equally deserve to live in dignity, safety and security. No family should have to fear for their safety within their own home or place of worship. We think most about the children in these societies who face trauma from a conflict far beyond their control. My administration will continue to engage Palestinians, Israelis, and other regional partners to work towards a sustainable calm.”

from ABC 57 coverage (local affiliate)

NILES, Mich. – Spectrum Health Lakeland began construction to expand heart and vascular services at its Niles hospital.

This expansion will create 3,760 square feet of new clinical space within the hospital, including 10 state-of-the-art exam rooms.

The expansion is part of a $2.9 million facility investment and includes renovations to the hospital’s bariatric and orthopedic units.

The building that currently holds Lakeland Heart and Vascular in Niles will be cleared to open up additional parking once the new expansion is completed.

“The decision to consolidate all heart and vascular services in one location within the hospital will help improve access and convenience for patients seeking cardiac care,” said Ray Cruse, president, Spectrum Health Lakeland Hospital Niles. “The added clinical space will also allow the Niles cardiology group to increase patient volumes while providing a better overall patient experience.”

Eid al Fitr after Ramadan: what the dates in 2021?

from MuslimAid dot-org (British article at web location)

The Eid 2021 date is anticipated to fall in the evening of Wednesday 12th May after Ramadan, however, this is dependent on the sighting of the moon

the Eid meaning is “the festival of breaking the fast” and commemorates the end of a month-long fast throughout Ramadan for Muslims in the UK and around the world. The festival is a very important time in Islam and allows families, loved ones and communities to come together and celebrate following a month of abstinence and dedication to Allah.

This is important because it marks the end of Ramadan, the month in which the Holy Qur’an was first revealed to Prophet Mohammad. Throughout Ramadan, Muslims around the world undertake a fast between the hours of sunset and sunrise and spend a lot of time in self-reflection while studying the Qur’an and connecting with Allah on a spiritual level. After a full month of sacrifice and dedication, Eid ul-Fitr is a time to come together with family and loved ones to enjoy everyday blessings.

Honest to God: Jose Andres (National Cathedral presentation): Virtual event details

 cathedral dot-org

Tuesday, May 11, 2021 | 7:00 p.m.

Jose Andres spends an evening in intimate conversation with Dean Randolph Marshall Hollerith and Canon Missioner Leonard Hamlin about leadership, inspiration and public service.  Dean Hollerith and Canon Hamlin invite Andres to pull back the curtain and share the stories behind his internationally recognized humanitarian efforts to eliminate poverty and feed the hungry.

Washington National Cathedral presents Honest to God, an online series featuring wisdom leaders, theologians and others offering spiritual content for these times.

Honest to God programs bring together people from different faith traditions to discuss how the values of their faith influence their work and leadership.  Our national life has been plagued in recent years by those who seek to tear down rather than to build up; to widen the divide instead of repairing the breach. Through intimate conversation and the sharing of stories, Honest to God speakers offer honesty, authenticity and faith at a time when our country is in dire need of such a generous gift.

ECLIPSE DATES FOR 2021

May 26, 2021: Total Eclipse of the Moon. This eclipse is only partially visible from North America. The best views will be from western North America; and the eclipse will also be visible from Hawaii. The Moon will enter the penumbra at 4:46 A.M. EDT (1:46 A.M. PDT) and umbra at 5:45 A.M. EDT (2:45 A.M. PDT). It will leave the umbra at 8:53 A.M. EDT (5:53 A.M. PDT) and penumbra at 9:51 A.M. EDT (6:51 A.M. PDT).

June 10, 2021: Annular Eclipse of the Sun. This eclipse is visible from northern and northeastern North America, beginning at 4:12 AM EDT and ending at 9:11 AM EDT. The time of maximum eclipse varies by location. Note that this is an annular eclipse; the Moon will never fully obscure the visible surface of the Sun—at maximum eclipse, an "annulus" (ring) around the Sun will still be visible. It is safe to view this eclipse only when using eye protection such as "eclipse glasses" or a solar filter.

November 19, 2021: Partial Eclipse of the Moon. This eclipse is visible from North America and Hawaii. The Moon will enter the penumbra at 1:00 AM EST on November 19 (10:00 PM PST, November 18) and umbra at 2:18 AM EST on November 19 (11:18 PM EST, November 18). It will leave the umbra at 5:47 AM EST (2:47 AM PST) and penumbra at 7:06 AM EST (4:06 AM PST) on November 19.
