BERRIEN SPRINGS — A single-prop Piper airplane, owned by Andrews University, crashed while practicing a crash landing scenario Monday afternoon (Sept. 6, 2010) at Andrews Airpark in Berrien Springs,Michigan. Neither the pilot nor the passenger pilot were injured.

Both pilots are FAA licensed, according to a Berrien Springs-Oronoko Township Police news release. One pilot was taking advanced instruction to upgrade his pilot license when the accident occurred.
Neither the police nor the university released the pilots’ names.
The pilots told police they practicing a downward spiral crash landing scenario, but came in at the wrong speed.
Speed created a hard landing which caused the left landing gear to collapse through the left wing and blow out the nose wheel. The plane remained upright after the 3:15 p.m. crash landing.
The Federal Aviation Administration was notified of the crash. Andrews Airpark will remain closed until the plane can be removed.
