As in recent Supreme Court nomination voting (Justice Sotomayor was confirmed one year ago with just 9 Republican votes of support), the Obama administration had to weld together a kind of blended bipartisan majority with 56 of Democrat legislators plus 2 independents (Sanders VT and Lieberman CT) along with five Republicans who chose to affirm her (Snowe & Collins of Maine, Lugar of Indiana, Graham of SC, and Gregg of NH). The New Yorker and former Dean of the Harvard (Massachusetts) Law School was described by the Judiciary Committee chairman in this manner:
“Her qualifications, intelligence, temperament and judgment will make her a worthy successor to Justice John Paul Stevens,” Senator Patrick J. Leahy, Democrat of Vermont.
