Bunker Hill - 250 years ago - Revolutionary War battle, June 17, 1775

Nathaniel Philbrick

Bunker Hill - 2013 history (published Viking Press)

Part Two, Chapter 10 (page 230)

The Americans had lost 115 killed and had 305

wounded, with most of the casualties occurring

during the retreat.  Of the approximately 2,200

British soldiers in the battle, 1,054 had been killed

or wounded.  The British had been victorious, but as

General Howe wrote: "The success is too dearly bought". . .

subsequently the Continental Congress voted to put

Virginia Planter and former army officer

George Washington

at the head of the Continental Army -- he impressed

his fellow delegates as "sober, steady, calm".
