Healthy, Hunger-free Kids Act 2010 (H.R. needs passing!)

discussion from Obama Food-o-rama blog here at Google Blogger

Washington, DC: As Congress returns to town on Monday for the lame duck session, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Education Secretary Arne Duncan will be publicly speaking out about the need for improved child nutrition legislation. During a joint appearance at DC's River Terrace Elementary School, the Secretaries will call on Members of the House to take immediate action on reauthorizing the Child Nutrition Act, the legislative centerpiece of First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! campaign.

Secs. Duncan and Vilsack will discuss the $4.5 billion Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act 2010, and urge the 111th Congress to act before it vanishes into the mists of history. They'll also "discuss the Obama administration’s priorities for improving school meals and the health of children across the nation," USDA has announced. The pressure is building on the House to (Let's) move: A huge bipartisan coalition of groups just sent letters to Members, urging them to pass the legislation during the lame duck. (Above: Sec. Vilsack)
River Terrace Elementary School is the first--and so far only--public school in DC to attain Gold-level status in the HealthierUS School Campaign, a USDA program that rewards schools for best practices in nutrition and fitness. Doubling the numbers of schools enrolled in the Challenge is one of the goals for Phase II of Mrs. Obama's childhood obesity campaign.
