The expatriate who left
England for the colonies of
N. America became a citizen here
in 1774, taking an oath of allegiance;
lived out his final years in the City of
New York, dying in 1809, largely
ostracized and having his citizenship
questioned. He did die an American
and was buried in New Rochelle, NY,
before he was later re-interred in England.
He would idealistically often assert that
he was a "Citizen of the world". He had
been made a citizen of France, an honor
granted to him in his lifetime and other
heroes like Alexander Hamilton, George
Washington, Ben Franklin at the time
of the 1789 French Revolution.
