How did Harriet Beecher Stowe defend her best-selling novel, "Uncle Tom's Cabin"?

 She appealed to the "highest authority" --

Because she truly believed in the justice

of her stance, she argued back to her

detractors and those who denied the

reality of chattel slavery --

I did not write it.  God wrote 

it.  I merely did his dictation.
