from Alberto Manguel's book in the
Yale University Press series: JEWISH LIVES
2023
"Maimonides' large, multitudinous self
was interested in almost everything:
religion,
law,
mathematics,
logic,
rhetoric,
astronomy,
ethical behavior,
social morals,
politics,
the question of what can be known.
Music and the visual arts did appeal to him, but
everything else did. There is Maimonides the
defender of tradition and Maimonides the thinker
who sought to reshape it, Maimonides the student
of Aristotle and Maimonides the critic, Maimonides
the believer and Maimonides the skeptic. Which is the
real Maimonides?
