wrote autobiographical memoirs, non-fiction works on Theology, memory, literature
His novel "Lion Country" was a finalist for a national Book Award; his historical novel "Godric" a finalist
for a Pulitzer Prize for fiction.
Survived by wife Judith, three daughters, one son-in-law, 10 grandchildren.
