Church Orthodox defender -- controversies with Arians, Novatianists,
also engaged in lethal combat with Neo-Platonists based at Library of Alexandria
(then led by philosopher Hypatia); he was also antagonistic with Jewish community
at Alexandria, eventually evicting and banishing those with whom he engaged in controversies
He also extremely engaged in debate and opposition to St. John Chrysostom of Antioch and
Bishop Nestorius of Constantinople
This "Doctor of the Church" died June 27, 444
