At the zoo, it was plenty hot for the animals, who were mostly nowhere to be seen. There was no evidence of the prairie dogs but their holes; the zebra was just a braying sound coming from the shade of his shed. Even the seals were panting.
But Gina Jackson was there with her zoo-loving son, and she looked downright collected in a linen shirt and cunning summer hat. The Northern California mom said she’s been shocked by Washington’s humidity, but nothing on her dry face betrayed the melting midday distress of most of those around her.
