THE BASICS: The only live, televised debate in the race for governor will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, October 10 at Detroit Public Television. It is a one-hour debate. Democratic nominee Virg Bernero and Republican nominee Rick Snyder will field questions from Detroit News Editorial Page Editor Nolan Finley and Detroit Free Press Editorial Page Editor Stephen Henderson. Both candidates will have an opening and closing statement.
WHERE CAN I WATCH OR LISTEN TO THE DEBATE? Public television stations across the state will carry the debate live. Commercial television stations carrying the debate live include channels 2, 4, and 7 in Metro Detroit, Channel 10 in the Lansing area, Channel 5 in the Flint-Saginaw region, Channel 3 in Kalamazoo and Channels 8 and 13 in the Grand Rapids region. We will add additional stations to this list as stations are confirmed. Numerous radio stations also will broadcast the debate, including WWJ-AM950 and Interlochen Public Radio on numerous frequencies up north. Check your local listings for details.
I’M BUSY SUNDAY NIGHT. WHERE CAN I CATCH THE REPLAY? On MiVote.org and on the Center for Michigan’s Great Debates page. The archived version of the debate will be available for on-demand viewing through Election Day.
WHAT ARE THE QUESTIONS? Only the debate moderators know for sure. The candidates have agreed that no subjects or questions are off limits for the debate. Our moderators (Finley and Henderson) decide the questions. In general, the themes of the debate are economic growth, education, and government reforms – the most prominent issues raised by Michigan citizens in the Center for Michigan’s nearly 600 Community Conversations in the past three years.
