A monumental church in
Amsterdam, Netherlands
is ravaged by flames on
New Year's Day 2026 :
local residents were evacuated
after a fire broke out at the
Vondelkerk shortly after
midnight. The cause of the
blaze has not yet been
confirmed . . .
BUILT 150 years ago --
it was an deconsecrated
building (no longer used
for congregational worship)
famous with a neo-Gothic
spire; no sign that anyone
was in the church at the time
of the blaze and no deaths
were expected from those
fighting the spread of the flames. . .
The fire came amid a push to
stop at-home fireworks displays
across the Netherlands.
Pierre Cuypers, architect, when it
was built in the 1870s, went on
to design the famous buildings:
Rijksmuseum
&
Central Station.
