The eruption opened the fissure in the earth about
two kilometers long between the Stora-Skogfell
and Hagafell Mountains on the Reykjanes Peninsula.
Hundreds of residents were evacuated from the Blue
Lagoon thermal spa, one of Icelands' top tourist
attractions
