Emancipation Day in history

January 1, 1863

President Abraham Lincoln signed the 

Emancipation Proclamation that took

effect in stages (Sept. 22, 1862) upon

issuing it for enslaved persons in the

states or parts of states still in rebellion

as of 1/1/1863 would be declared free.
