Yom Kippur 2017 -- details about what is means for Jews? (Chabad dot-org)

Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year, when we are closest to G‑d and to the essence of our souls. Yom Kippur means “Day of Atonement,” as the verse states, “For on this day He will forgive you, to purify you, that you be cleansed from all your sins before G‑d.”1
It is held on the 10th day of Tishrei, coming on the heels of Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year, which is on the first and second days of Tishrei).
For nearly 26 hours (in 2017, from several minutes before sunset on Sept 29 until after nightfall on September 30) we “afflict our souls” by avoiding the following five actions:
  • Eating or drinking (in case of need, see here and consult a medical professional and a rabbi)
  • Wearing leather shoes
  • Applying lotions or creams
  • Washing or bathing
  • Engaging in conjugal relations
Like Shabbat, no work is to be done, and special holiday candles are lit before the onset of the holy day.

World Alzheimer's Day (Sept. 21, 2017) -- definition

www.alz.org/

World Alzheimer’s Day, September 21st of each year, is a day on which Alzheimer’s organizations around the world concentrate their efforts on raising awareness about Alzheimer’s and dementia. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, a group of disorders that impairs mental functioning.
Every 68 seconds, someone develops Alzheimer’s disease. At current rates, experts believe the number of Americans living with Alzheimer’s will quadruple to as many as 16 million by the year 2050.
Alzheimer’s disease is often called a family disease, because the chronic stress of watching a loved one slowly decline affects everyone. 5.4 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States and the only cause of death among the top 10 in the United States that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed. With the increases in life spans and baby boomers coming of age, support for Alzheimer’s research is more critical to our families than ever.

When is Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) this fall?

A: marked in synagogues and temples, Evening of September 20, 2017 - Common Calendar)

from Religion News Service article:

As Jews gather in synagogues to mark Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, they will hear the blast of the shofar or ram’s horn, a mournful shriek intended to wake them up.
This year, that wake-up call may be louder than usual.
Rabbis have always seen their High Holy Day sermons as an opportunity to deliver a potent and impassioned plea during the year’s most sacred season and at a time when sanctuaries are filled to capacity.
But this year rabbis across the spectrum say they feel a particular urgency to rouse their congregants to action. In the nine months since President Trump took office, the Muslim travel ban, the attempted repeal of the Affordable Care Act, the rescinding of the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program and most especially the anti-Semitic Charlottesville, Va., protest have forced many congregational leaders to rethink the rules.
“It’s clear to almost every rabbi in this country across the movements that you can’t be neutral. You have to take a side,” said Rabbi Jill Jacobs, executive director of T’ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights. “There’s no way to hide from the issues this year.”

Largest Egg operation in Michigan - Herbruck's

Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch is run today by Harry Jr.’s four sons, with their sister as a fellow shareholder. Five members of the fourth generation also work in the business. The company’s flock has grown from 3,000 laying hens in the 1950s to six million today. But its founding principle remains the same:
Do what’s right – for the hens, for employees, for consumers, for the community, and for the earth.

Years of Growth

  • In 1981 Herbruck’s founded Poultry Management Systems, Inc., a technology company that developed and marketed what became the industry standard in environmental control systems. The company was sold in 2009.
  • In 1991, after years of supplying premium-quality shell eggs, Herbruck’s added a breaking facility and began selling whole liquid eggs to the food service industry.
  • In 1992 Herbruck’s became a franchisee and distributor of Eggland’s Best, Inc. Herbruck’s produces all varieties of Eggland’s Best eggs and distributes them in four states.
  • Herbruck’s began producing organic eggs onsite in 1998 and opened its Green Meadow Organics facility in 2008.
  • Herbruck’s quickly became one of the largest organic egg producers in the country, with 1.2 million organic laying hens today and with plans to grow that number to 1.7 million by 2016.
  • Today organic eggs are the fastest growing segment of the company’s business. Organic eggs and cage-free eggs are distributed nationwide under the Green Meadow brand and in the Midwest under the Eggland’s Best name.

Fifty Years and Counting

The company celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2008. Today Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch is the largest egg producer in Michigan and the 13th largest in the United States.
