Lincoln signed Income Tax on those earning more than $800 for war effort

 ON THIS DATE IN HISTORY

August 5, 1861 (4 months into

the U.S. Civil war that began at

Charleston, South Carolina's

Fort Sumter)

POTUS 16 signed the

Revenue Act of 1861,

which levied a flat tax of 3%

to fund the ongoing U.S. Army

effort to end that war . . .
