born March 8, 1915 in Osaka, Japan

died October 7, 1992

Episcopal Priest, Dean of Univ. of Chicago Divinity School

from 1970 until 1980

founder of the American Society for the Study of Religions

Professor emeritus

author of many articles, books, monographs on Japanese religion

died of pneumonia following a stroke that same year

obtained degrees both in Japan and the United States

upon his arrival in the United States, he was taken to internment camps

for 3 1/2 years in New Mexico and Idaho

after an early academic career, he became a U.S. citizen in 1955
