Rev Ayo Saint Nicholas Lecture2020

This year’s Catholic Studies Christmas Lecture, co-sponsored by Durham University and Notre Dame London Global Gateway, takes a closer look at the evolution of St. Nicholas, the saint whose feast the Catholic Church celebrates each year on December 6.

Join Rev. Nicholas Ayo, C.S.C., professor emeritus at the University of Notre Dame, as he explores the origins of the snowy-bearded saint whose legendary generosity morphed into America’s secular Santa Claus figure. Using ancient and medieval sources along with more modern and widely known poems and stories, Father Ayo will describe St. Nicholas as a powerful leader whose acts of kindness far surpassed the modern practice of candy in a shoe!

Although we can’t gather in person for this year’s lecture, we still very much encourage the Christmas spirit. Feel free to come equipped with a mulled wine and mince pie!
