Search for Missing Kayaker -- Noon, St. Joe River, Niles, Michigan 49120 -- Fire Dept. & State Police

Niles Police say the man who died in a kayak accident on the St. Joseph River on New Year’s Day was 40-year-old Jean Claude Mutabazi of South Bend. The three surviving kayakers have been identified as 37-year-old Pierre Celestin of Berkeley, California, 81-year-old Ted Knudson of South Bend, and 72-year-old Tom Lehman of South Bend. Niles Fire Chief Larry Lamb says rescue crews spent about four hours looking for Mutabazi.
Two of the three survivors were treated and released from Lakeland Hospital Niles for exposure. All four were still wearing their life jackets when they were found.
The Berrien County Medical Examiner’s Office is working to determine the cause of Matubazi’s death.

The emergency call came in at around 8:30 a.m. Jan. 1, 2020

Officials say four adult male kayakers were on the river when at least two of them ran into trouble. Three of the kayakers were either rescued or able to get out of the water on their own.

The fourth kayaker was unaccounted for after going over the dam.

Emergency crews spent hours searching for that person near the Broadway Bridge, south of Island Park.

At around 12:30 p.m., the fourth kayaker was found.

Just before 3 p.m., Niles Mayor Nick Shelton announced that the kayaker had died.
