A different kind of Labor Day (Monday September 5) weekend festival is planned for Saturday in downtown Buchanan.

The third annual "Non-Pareil" celebration features a mix of history, art, food, wine and entertainment.

The event is sanctioned by the city and the Buchanan Chamber of Commerce, but it has been a grassroots effort, started and organized by downtown merchants and representatives of art and historical preservation organizations.

Downtown business and community leaders have had one-day festivals three times a year, always on the Memorial and Labor Day weekends with "Unsanctioned" in late May and "Non-Pareil" or "Un-Equaled" in early September. In addition, there has been two Thanksgiving weekend events.

Saturday September 3 activities are in and around the Common green. The Buchanan Farmers Market and the historic Pears Mill will be open during the day and Civil War re-enactors will have the "Battle of Buchanan Common" at 2 p.m.

Elsewhere around town, people can enjoy food and wine at several locations and work by area artists and artisans outdoors, under tents and inside shops. The Buchanan Art Center will have activities all day.

Live music will be offered downtown starting at 5 p.m., featuring monTe micHel bLeu, followed by Deborrah Wyndgate and jazz musicians, The Juli Wood Trio, until 10 p.m.

People can find out more about the festival at the www.NonPareilBuchanan .com website.
