Maltese reunited with family after NM auto accident months later

from WNDU dot-com news item log listing (August 14, 2011):

A Maltese dog named Caesar who disappeared more than a year ago after a car crash that killed two members of its owning family in eastern New Mexico is back in the bosom of his family in Michigan.
Caesar was found by a volunteer looking for adoptable dogs at a shelter in Tucumcari, N.M. She tracked down owner Monica Benson after Caesar was scanned for a microchip.
Benson lost her husband and a daughter in the accident. She tells The Detroit News the reunion was "unbelievable," and Caesar recognized her and her four children.
Caesar left Tucumcari last week and arrived late Saturday at the Benson's Genesee County home. It's in Vienna Township near Clio, about 10 miles north of Flint and about 65 miles north-northwest of Detroit.

Caesar's 9:30 p.m. reunion with the family capped off a 1,500-mile journey for the dog, who'd been missing since a tragic June 15,2010, crash in New Mexico that killed Benson's husband, Gary, and daughter, Emily, 5, and injured her 18-month-old son, Benjamin. The Bensons, their five children and Caesar were riding on a remote stretch of Interstate 40 near Tucumcari, N.M., when their 2001 Chevrolet minivan overturned. In the accident, Caesar was thrown from the van and wandered away. He was found when a volunteer at an animal shelter seeking to place him for adoption found he was wearing a microchip. . .
