St. Jerome's Commentary on Matthew (transl. by Thomas P. Scheck, CUA Press) -- why 3 gifts?

 TEXT Matthew 2.11

And opening their treasures they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

"Juvencus the priest (Spanish Christian poet) has comprehended the mysteries of the gifts most

beautifully in a single brief verse:

GOLD, MYRRH, and FRANKINCENSE are the gifts they bring,

to A MAN, to A GOD, and to A KING."

From Book One of the Commentary (covers 1::1 up to 10:42)
