Word of the year 2021 (Merriam-Webster): Vaccine

 from Merriam-Webster dot-com In everyday use, words are useful tools that communicate assertions, ideas, aspirations, and uncertainties. 

But they can also become vehicles for ideological conflict.

• This is what happened to vaccine in 2021. The promising medical solution to the pandemic that upended our lives in 2020 also became a political argument and source of division. The biggest science story of our time quickly became the biggest debate in our country, and the word at the center of both stories is vaccine.

  Hopes for cures and treatments of COVID-19 began as soon as the disease began to spread. Research into a new kind of vaccine containing messenger RNA, or mRNA, genetic material rather than an inactivated form of the virus was accelerated. After decades of studies conducted for application to diseases such as influenza, Ebola, and rabies, this new type of mRNA vaccine against the SARS-CoV-2 virus was rapidly developed, tested, and manufactured for broad use, with the first doses being administered in the U.S. in December 2020.

  The use of a vaccine that triggers an immune response in an entirely new way required that Merriam-Webster revise and expand its entry for the word, which the company did in May. The definition, which formerly read “a preparation of killed microorganisms, living attenuated organisms, or living fully virulent organisms that is administered to produce or artificially increase immunity to a particular disease,” was replaced with the following:

  1 : a preparation that is administered (as by injection) to stimulate the body's immune response against a specific infectious agent or disease: such as

  a : an antigenic preparation of a typically inactivated or attenuated (see ATTENUATED sense 2) pathogenic agent (such as a bacterium or virus) or one of its components or products (such as a protein or toxin)

  b : a preparation of genetic material (such as a strand of synthesized messenger RNA) that is used by the cells of the body to produce an antigenic substance (such as a fragment of virus spike protein)

  Interest in the definition of this word was intense in the past year: lookups for vaccine increased 601% year-over-year from 2020. But interest in the word has been high since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, with much discussion of the funding, development, testing, and ultimate distribution of the vaccines occurring in 2020. The prominence of the word vaccine in our lives in this era becomes even more starkly clear when we compare 2021 to 2019, a period in which lookups for the word increased 1048%.

  Lookups of vaccine, already very high all year, jumped by 535% in August, long after discussions about vaccines began taking place in the press and widespread distribution in parts of the world were well underway. A number of stories in August show that discussions about policy, approval, and vaccination rates—rather than the vaccine itself—sent people to the dictionary. During this period, New York and California instituted vaccine mandates for health care workers; a federal mandate was announced for nursing home staff; an announcement of plans for booster shots for the general public in the U.S. prompted condemnations of inequities in vaccine distribution; and full FDA approval for Pfizer’s vaccine was granted.

  This new higher rate of lookups since August has remained stable throughout the late fall, showing not just a very high interest in vaccine, but one that started high and grew during the course of 2021.

  Vaccine comes from the Latin word for “cow,” vacca, because the term was initially used to refer to inoculation using doses of cowpox that, it was discovered, protect humans against smallpox. This word is a relatively recent one in English, dating back to the 1880s. See more on how vaccines work.

  The word vaccine was about much more than medicine in 2021. For many, the word symbolized a possible return to the lives we led before the pandemic. But it was also at the center of debates about personal choice, political affiliation, professional regulations, school safety, healthcare inequality, and so much more.

  Few words can express so much about one moment in time.

The telescope lifted off atop an Ariane 5 rocket from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana at 7:20 a.m. ET.

The 2021 James Webb Space Telescope will orbit 930,000 miles from earth in "Mars-ward" direction

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope will be more extreme than its famous predecessor in a variety of ways, including its cosmic locale.

The $10 billion Webb is considerably bigger, more complex and more powerful than the Hubble Space Telescope, which has been studying the heavens from Earth orbit for more than three decades. 

And the new observatory, which is scheduled to launch on Dec. 25, 2021 will be going much farther afield as well — all the way out to the Sun-Earth Lagrange Point 2 (L2), about 930,000 miles (1.5 million kilometers) from our planet in the Marsward (not sunward) direction.

On The Voice, the trio opened with “Helplessly Hoping” by Crosby, Stills & Nash, showcasing their tight harmonies, which ultimately led to all four judges looking to bring them into their teams.

During the battle round, Girl Named Tom performed “Seven Bridges Road” with fellow contestant Kinsey Rose, and moved on with Clarkson’s team. In the knockout round, Girl Named Tom performed Glen Campbell’s “Wichita Lineman” against contestant Holly Forbes, and were again chosen to move forward on Team Kelly. "Last night at approximately 1 AM police informed us that a threat was reported through the Michigan state police that report indicated that a student was going to shoot up the middle school on 1215," said Eding.

This threat is currently being further investigated by the school and police.

Lakeshore is now asking for parents to review materials sent out by the school to ensure that all students are doing ok both mentally and emotionally while dealing with the stress of threats.

Students will conduct classes online for the rest of the week (13-17), and are anticipating returning back to in-person learning after holiday break on January 3rd.

STEVENSVILLE, Mich. (WNDU) - Lakeshore Public Schools are closed on Wednesday “due to another threat”, according to the district’s Facebook page.

On Monday, two threats were made at Lakeshore’s high and middle schools, according to our reporting partners at the Herald Palladium.

The student who allegedly made the threat at the high school was taken into custody, but the district remained closed Tuesday while the threat at the middle school was investigated.

The district has asked everyone to make sure children understand that safety concerns are taken seriously, and are not jokes or pranks.

Criminal Contempt of Congress -- what do Mark Meadows, Steve Bannon, and G. Gordon Liddy have in common?

Now that former President Donald Trump’s ex-chief strategist Steve Bannon has been hit with two criminal contempt of Congress charges for refusing to comply with a House subpoena, legal scholars have to turn back decades for relevant precedent.

The indictment was filed Friday, and detailed Bannon’s ongoing defiance of the House Select Committee to Investigate the Jan. 6, 2021 Attack, chaired by Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.).

Although the indictment was not entirely unexpected—the House of Representatives voted in late October to hold Bannon in contempt—an actual conviction would be the first of its kind in almost half a century. The Department of Justice traditionally enjoys wide latitude over whether to convene a grand jury after receiving a contempt referral from Congress, and the vote from the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives hardly made Bannon’s charges inevitable. That a grand jury now has signed off on Bannon’s charges sets the stage for a rare prosecution—said to be the first contempt of Congress case brought after executive privilege was asserted.

In 1974, Watergate mastermind G. Gordon Liddy was found guilty of two counts of contempt of Congress for refusing to answer questions before a House subcommittee. He was given a suspended six-month sentence and one year’s probation, largely because he was already serving time for his role in the burglary of the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office building, as the New York Times reported.

‘The Voice’ Season 21 finale date and time

Before The Voice can name a winner, fans will need to see one more round of performances. Those will happen on Monday, Dec. 13, 2021 from 8 to 10 p.m. ET. Because it’s a two-hour show, the Top 5 artists will likely perform at least two songs each. The Live Shows typically have a theme for each week, although NBC has not yet revealed the finale’s theme.

So far, season 21 has included themes like Fan Week, Dedication Week, and ’90s Week. Past seasons have also included a week where the artists perform one cover and one original song, so that could happen in part one of the finale.

Fans can vote for their favorite artists until Tuesday at 7 a.m. ET. Then, on Tuesday, Dec. 14, at 8 p.m. ET, the final results show begins. Unlike the typical Tuesday shows, this one will be two hours long.

Berrien County MI High School authorities close Dec. 8, 2021

Students went home early Tuesday 12/7 at St. Joseph High School in St. Joseph, Michigan after a potential threat was discovered.

Officials at the school notified families with an email about a threat that was found in two of the high school’s bathrooms. All after-school activities on Tuesday at the high school or involving St. Joe students were also cancelled.

The decisions were made “out of an abundance of caution” but the district says they don’t believe there is an immediate threat. The schools notified the City police, who are conducting an investigation, and the district says they will share more information as the investigation goes on.

A 16-year-old student was taken into custody. Classes are canceled on Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2021. Classes are expected to resume on Thursday Dec. 9.
